Earthquake measuring 5.2 shakes Louisville area
Business First of Louisville

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook the Louisville metro area about 5:40 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

As of 7 a.m., emergency services personnel reported minor damage and no injuries.

The earthquake was centered in central Illinois about six miles from the town of Mount Carmel, according to the USGS.

A power outage at the Caesars Indiana casino in Harrison County is the only immediate report of any impact on Louisville area businesses, according to local media reports.

The riverboat casino shifted to generator power when it lost power.

Local emergency-management officials also reported that the facade of a building on Kentucky Avenue, between Second and Third streets, was damaged by the quake.

Aftershocks of a similar strength to the early morning quake are expected within several hours of the initial incident, according to emergency services personnel.

An article with details about earthquake insurance appears in today's print edition of Business First.

Earthquake insurance is an endorsement that can be added to an insurance policy.

Kentucky's insurance policies allows insurers to place a moratorium on sales of earthquake coverage for up to 30 days following an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 4.0, according to Ronda Sloan, communications director in the Kentucky Office of Insurance in Frankfort.

HAHA the New Madrid fault line is gonna fuck you up. It's about time. Hopefully within the next decade another 8+ pointer will rip through and humble the midwest like it did in the 1800s. People always forget about the New Madrid fault line.

Go Mother Earth!

Are structures cant take it. If it a 8.0 or better were to hit, it could be the worst disaster in american history

Yes, I know.

That is the point I try to make. Earth > human ignorance. We build subways in Los Angelas, on a major fault line and cities on the New Madrid that can't handle tremors. People are going to pay for it with their lives, and I cannot say I feel bad about it. We parade around on this planet as if we own it, quarrelling over lands that can smite us down with a hurricane, tornado, quake, blizzard, etc. We are ants on this planet, and as mighty as ants can be, they can still get squashed as easy as any other bug.

I don't feel sorry for anyone who lives in a dangerous area, whether it is Cali or Florida. I was in Florida when we got raped by 4 hurricanes in 2004, and again when Wilma & Rita hit us in 2005. Luckily, the Floridians were more soundly prepared than those of Louisianna. As much as I hate Florida sometimes, it seems they're finally starting to catch on to storm preparedness, like everywhere else should do.

Even here in Tacoma, I feel it's ignorant to live in the shadow of a large volcano and think that it's never going to explode in your face. Sure, their are volcano evacuation routes here, but is that ALL the government here has for backup? What about tsunamis?

People need to wake up and be aware of what is going on other than what to put on their iPods and Britney Spears' mental tirades.

woke me up in the morning... was a weird feeling, to say the least.

doors rattling and the bed was shaking, I just thought it was a strong wind or something.

Curious to see how my wife felt about it working in the hospital last night.

I slept through the first one, but I have an air bed and I'd hazard a guess and say that that's why we didn't feel it.

I was at work when the first aftershock hit, it was just a short one, but pretty cool seeing as I was on the second floor and no one on the first even felt it.

You guys remember the quake we had around 9-10 years ago?

Felt it in Chicago at 4:41 - When I looked it up later I was surprised how quickly it reached here.

This is the second one I have felt in Illinois - the last one was a few years ago and a bit stronger.

For both of them I first thought it was a huge freight train or something.
