I need to get my supra, and my eclipse painted... i looked on maaco, and they seem ok... but i went to earl scheib and they have some awesome packages especially just for a budget paint job which is all i want... are they any good? i was thinkin of the silver package... but, im not too sure.

Anybody ever use them? specifically the modesto, ca store?

Or if you know a good paint place in the bay area let me know.

I did the Earl Scheib black and i hate it!!!

I got the best one they had and they didnt lift the heads to get the side trim the painted over the windshield jets, i have drips under my mirrors:nono:
The paint itself is "thick" it just looks cheap in the light. It is strong though, i lived in AZ for a summer and never washed it do to not running and now a year ago it has no fades or chips!

You Get What You Pay For....:naughty:

my car was painted by that place in south bay... they suck.... i imagine if you do good prep work like others were saying... it would come out alot better...

they do not do under the trim, or anything a real paintjob would buy

If you are going to be doing your own prep work, take it to a good body shop and have them spray it - it will not cost you that much.

If you let Earl Scheib or Maaco paint your car, you will regret it for a long time.

iunno guys, unless hes doing a show car it doesnt need to be a 10 paint job, a 7-8 works well. (by 10 i mean better than factory) we had my brother's car shot at earl schieb and he did most of the prep work himself.

however we did use stock toyota paint with an extra coat of clear iirc and there was 1 spot that needed to be redone (had a bad dent in the hood that needed to be repaired) but they fixed it for $0 (get the lifetime warranty) this was 2 years ago and the car still looks great

if i were you id use some stock toyota paint and do the prep yourself and you should be good to go unless you want to have it be perfect.

Earl Schieb and the like are one step above rattle bombs. Don't let them touch your car if you want it to look decent.

You CAN afford a decent body shop to paint your car- just do all the stripping yourself. Take off the bumper covers, all the trim, all the lights, all the door handles, etc... yourself. Minimize their time spent prepping and all your money will go to paint and polish, not removal and reinstallation of parts and masking around trim. Remember, they work by the hour. Let them spend their hours painting and not wrenching!

As long as its shiny and even across i'll be happy... the eclipse i have im trying to sell as is sits and does nothing... the supra i want to get painted, but dont think i will until i fix the crack in the 3-piece tails and switch to a 89+ bumper...

As for my eclipse, theres no trim on it... just the wing on the back... and i wish i had time to do the body work, because i would, but i need to sell this car as my sister just passed away and were getting her car too... and im just wasting my money on it...

Any other shops you guys suggest? I'll pay up to or around 1,000 for the paint job... I live in Tracy, so i would prefer stockton, modesto, livermore... i can go down to san jose, but i would like to keep it a little closer.

And for those of you with bad paint jobs, do you have any photos of the "bad" job they did on your car? and when did you get it done?

the reason it is so cheap is because like mentioned above, they dont do prep work (or REAL prep work). They also make there own paint which really is crap. We usually refuse to repair cars that have these paint jobs due to not being able to warranty the paint or workmanship. If you do all your detrimming and prep then it would only cost about $1500 for a good, quality paint material and painter.

I took an Auto body class at the beginning of the year and will take the second part starting in 2 weeks. It was pretty basic and enough to get someone started. I painted my red SC engine lid on my MR2 black to match my car. It came out decent you would never know it was my first panel I sprayed without the eye of the class instructor. And i did it outside under my car port. I had a good spray gun and had it set up properly. I bought about $110 worth of paint and other chemicals and supplies but I have enough to do my MR2 and Supra.

I went to the automotive paint store and told them that I am an amateur painter that knows enough to be dangerous. I told him how and where I would be painting and the salesman sold me the best product for my situation.
Dont buy Toyota paint because it is Toyota....you need to buy paint that fits the situation in which you will be painting.

The reason these places are so cheap is that they do not use good paint and they do not prep the car so that the paint has good adhesion to the metal. Dont throw your money away. Learn how to do it yourself! It is not hard at all. Just takes alot of patience!! You will make it look better then they can and you will be proud of the work you do!

Im sure i could learn... but its cold and rainy right now... so anybody who knows anything about painting, you dont paint when its cold and humid outside... We have spray guns and what not, my dad can paint a fender or two... but when it comes to the whole car... im a little skeptical, and we dont have the time to do all of the work that a "good" job requires.

BorHor who painted your car????

unless you guys are getting some very high dollar paint jobs you do realize that the only time a paint shop is going to pull the bumpers, taillights, doors and ect. to paint is when there doing a full color change. With a repaint of the same color they just mask, sand, spray

I used to run a production paint shop about 20 years ago, so I know.

Find out who the painter is and grease him with some extra $$$, it makes a big difference.

Trust me, I've seen the difference between a painter who's been given an "incentive" and one who's collecting hourly.

Cheap paint job on the Eclipse, sell it, and use the money to fund a good paint job on the Supra.
What kind of painter do you think works there? They hire the cheapest help they can find. A good body shop is gonna have a good painter/body man, and pay him well to keep him there.

Suprabad's suggestion is a good one, to. Tips are always appreciated :)

cuel knows exactly what im talking about... except i would sell the eclipse and use that money to buy a 240z which i want to swap a 7mgte into. I love smog free turbo cars.

but cuel you think earl schieb will do a decent enough job to pass for anybody lookin to buy a car? and it would just be a respary of the silver thats on here... ill probably sand down and bondo/primer the scratches that are on the car, along with the dents...

Meh, its not good, but passable. There will be a run here and there, but that's pretty typical. Unfortunately, silver is about as bad as black at showing every little imperfection, so make sure you get it smooth. When you pick it up, check it before you leave, and they'll fix the major flaws. I wouldn't sweat the small stuff, though.
