Dumb Question

I know this is probably a dumb question but I have to ask anyway. So I have a little light on my dash... but I have no idea what it's for. I have an 89 non turbo, and it's the light all the way to the left. Left of the temp guage. It looks like some sort of filter, but everyone I've ask says that there would never be a light for that. I replaced the air filter anyways, and the light actually went away for a while but now it's back again and I think it IS having an effect on engine performance. Any information you guys have would be appreciated, thanks.

Oh yeah, also. I just recently put it through it's first 270mile trip and it actually made it, but when I got to the gas station at home after I put gas in it and tried starting it again TONS of white smoke spewed out of the exhaust and apparently the thing was flooded with fuel because it wouldn't turn over until I cranked it repeatedly over an interval of half an hour. And once it turned, the white smoke stopped. Before driving it, I put in a bottle of that sea foam stuff in the gas tank so I think it worked really well because the injectors must be really clean to be pumping all that fuel in the chamber.

I think the problem is the spark plugs/wires need to be replaced because they aren't burning the fuel off enough. Any ideas? The mileage of the car is unknown as the previous owner swapped the engine from one of those vendors in Japan, but it runs very strong and I just had the clutch replaced. I'm also slowly getting the body back together heh.

Hahah Quote from K.V. Jr's Breakfast of Champions: "Dumb F#$@ing bird"

Hobbes: Thats your check coolant light. The white smoke is from coolant buring in your engine. Don't bother with your plugs and wires, its time for a new headgasket.

oh ok, well I'm changing the plugs and wires anyway. So what do I need to do this job? Headgasket scraper, torque wrench... the new headgasket, headgasket sealant, am I missing anything else? Should I drain the engine oil and the coolant?

Yep it's the bird cage light..., LOL, low fluids man..., I found out the hard way. I had to come here to make an ass of myself as well. If you look in your owners manual, it's in there, that's where I found it after everyone had a good poke at me.

yeah, I just checked out the site and my own personal manual. It does look like it would give me a lot of insight on the way the car is put together. But I have another question for you guys. So I filled the car with coolant today and started it up. The light went away and no white smoke. Infact, no problem at all. So my question is, do you guys think it might be one of those other things listed on the site rather then the BHG? Such as a cracked intake or IAC valve? Because I would think if it was the gasket it would be plumming white smoke all the live long day ya know?

Sorry to hear about your BHG...I think of it as a rite of passage in the Supra community...It took me two all-nighters plus 4 days to complete, then I had to deal with the numerous coolant and oil leaks, plus a blown turbo... Remember, before this job, the most I had done was change spark plugs... It's doable, but very tedious and time consuming...just like everything else on this car!! :)
