Drive shaft lengths

Well, i just started putting on my drive shaft again, well it seems like it is shorter then i would expect. Is it normal to have about 1.5-2" of space between the drive shaft and differential?
Also for fun, i took pix of the auto and manual drive shafts next to each other.
Enjoy

Close up of the lengths.

The Auto is much shorter. Well, if anyone knows if it is normal to have a bit of space, let me know. Basically i think the drive shaft just goes in extra deep so when you are installing it, it is easier to install. let me know if that is correct. Thanks!

?? I think the Diff is stationary at all times being that it's an IRS set up....

Yes, it is stationary, but it's to compensate for the flex like viperkillertt said.
That's why I said it moves a little bit, maybe I should have been more elaborate.
