drag racing clutch opinions

Hey everyone, i got a basic setup right now 550s,lex, 9:1 comp, 15lbs boost, stock ct26, no power steering pump. Right now i have a 6 puck with stock pressure plate which holds up decent on the street but at the track it cant keep it together. This engine is in a mustang, I plan on putting slicks on it once i get a cluch and plan on launching it very hard allot. Not looking to spend 1K$ on a clutch right now. Its not making allot of power yet but shooting for 500ish range. Would like a clutch that will handle slicks. Where are the guys with slicks? what setup do you got?

I dont run slicks but I have similar mods, except with a 57 trim, and I use a Competition Clutch. Theyre not that expensive (~$450) and I have had ZERO problems on the street or at the track.

If you're going for big power later and you want a clutch that absolutely will hold the power with lots of abuse.... go multiplate (Spec, OS Giken, Tilton)

well multidisc is the obvious choice ya know, like i said this is a budget car looking for the people that dont just buy the most expensive part. multidisc setups just makes strong clutches streetable, I can deal with grippy clutches on the street. Basically if you have a 11 or 12 sec supra with r154 running slicks, what clutch do you have? like it or no? buy it again?, etc..

im running driftmotion stage IV action 6 puck and it holds up good on the street... dont have much experience on the track though. i went to the track this weekend and it held its own

The HPF bronze has held well for me at high 400's rwhp. Never had any problems launching with DR's.. It is a bit chattery however.

I love my clutch (it's in my sig), and if it starts slipping I'm going multiplate or auto...

I won't go anywhere near the RPS 3200 pressureplate, and that's the only other clutch setup that will take more power in a single disk.

anyone have any exp with the spec stage 3+ or know which clutches will lock up to what flywheels, I am in deer need of some expertise in this area. I have a 2jz with gt40 planning on running around 500 to the wheels and thats it.

Like MRSupra said, he has had lots of good luck with the HPF bronze.

I have the a South Bend Clutch and love it. It's a stock pressure plate with an 8puck ceramic disc. Should run you about $450 or so, give them a call.

I love it, and you will be just fine with it at the track. One thing to consider is to not go with an lightweight flywheel, I went back to stock and love it! I have a Boss turbo and run a little over 400rwhp and 12's with my Mickey Thompsons and love it. I have several passes on it and its fine. When I get my car put back together, my setup will be good for about 500rwhp and I'll be using this clutch for that and running 11's.

What is wrong with your setup? Your clutch is fine for the levels you are at! You might be having a problem somewhere else.

When my HPF Bronse wears out, I'm probably going to switch to the the Feramic disc (while keeping my ACT pressure plate). A friend of mine has the Feramic and it's a good bit smoother than my Bronse. And it should hold even more power.

And for the record, I had a Spec2 clutch before and I killed it real quick at the track at only about 400rwhp.

I have the RPS 3200 w/ 6 puck sprung disc and RPS flywheel. I haven't run slicks yet, but have wide ass Sumitomo tires on that actually hook up a little on the track. I am running a SP71 between 20-26 psi on E-85 with all the right supporting mods. The car is Fast. I have only taken it to the track once and had a few issues with different things, but the clutch held great. Even through my terrible launches which consisted of massive spin or severe wheel hop. (so severe in fact, that I broke a bracket on my crank trigger lol)
I haven't dynod yet but I'm sure I've well exceeded 500 whp.

I had a Feramic clutch and welded it 3 Times to my Fidanza flywheel I had! I'll never go to another feramic clutch again. I know that with the Stock Flywheel it would have been a little better but I'm not going to risk it. Now I did have the setup same as DL has posted at the 400rwhp level and put easily 60 launches at the track with it and 10k miles. But mine had the old style 3200 pressure plate and the diaphragm separated. I love the setup that I have now. I think that the only thing I could benefit from is a little stiffer pressure plate, like the ACT HD or Xtreme. But for now up to 450rwhp I'll keep what I have. I'll be posting up some new times and vids next month.

I've driven 2 years ago 6000miles with ~300whp and last summer 3500miles with 530rwhp on my 7m-gte with spec stage 3+, never slipped. It's a very streetable clutch, not too far from the stock clutch in daily use and works well even in traffic.

By the way, clutches are rated by how much torque they can hanle and 575 lb/tq on this clutch shoud take care of those 500 rwhp:2ar15:

I welded my Bronse to my Fidanza flywheel also not to long after it was installed. I'm surprised you let it happen 3 times. I got rid of my Aluminum flywheel right after it happend to me. Never ever had a problem with it welding to the stock flywheel and Iv'e had this setup for a long time now.

Yup the Clutch that Wardog posted is the one I had. It was a great clutch for the street, just didn't like the strip. I went back to a stock flywheel as soon as I could. It was just hard to find a good one.
