My good downpipe cracked, and while I get it repaired I'm forced to use my stock downpipe. Problem is the heatshield is a nasty rattling piece of crap.

I can't stand the deafening rattle the tin heatshield makes.

Can I tear the crappy heatshield off it and run without it, or will this fry something or worse yet catch something on fire.

It doesn't look like it does much but rattle.

Should be fine...aftermarket pipes don't have a heat shield. The only concern is the CAT on the stock downpipe...CAT's get very hot. Make sure your speedo cable is well clear of it or the plastic inside will melt and re-solidify freezing/snapping the cable. Your under hood temps will go up too due to the CAT.

I may have misunderstood. If you're talking about the heat shield that mounts to the body below the brake line shield...yes you need it.

You got it right jdub, I'm talking about the heatshield that bolts directly to the downpipe. Incidentally, my car is a 49 state car and doesn't have a cat in the stock downpipe (or anywhere else now).

have a 3inch downpipe and it burnt my speedometer cable...I'm going to wrap it with header wrap

I have my speedo cable tucked against the firewall so I'm hoping it won't be a problem. Although the stock downpipe does run a little closer to the firewall than my big (3 1/2") downpipe.
