Do they make an electric water pump for us?

whoohoo my first post...

Anyway, I have a friend who has an LT1 with an electric water pump and electric fans, and he says its great because he can park his car and in about 20 minutes you can touch the intake manifold with your hand... *which is true, I did touch it* I was wondering if anyone made an electric water pump for a 7M motor to compliment electric fans...

not to hijack the thread, but i've been torn on the whole electric fan thing.

this is the way i see it:

at idle, the electric fans are spinning faster than the stock clutch fan. now, isnt this where you need the fan the most? at idle? you're only running at about 700rpm, and the electric fans spin faster than 700rpm.

now, the more you speed up while driving, the air being forced through your radiator helps even more, and besides, doesnt the stock clutch fan disengage at highway cruising?

*this is all speculation, it's just stuff i've been pondering for awhile...*

Stock clutch fan is engaged via heat - if it's hot, it's on.

Electric fans spin more at idle, sure... but they don't have the same blade cross section - they are thinner by a large amount. And consider this - your engine makes a LOT more heat at full boost than it does at idle.

I'm basing my suspicion on the various people that have had overheating problems with electric fans, then gone back to the stock clutch fan and had the problem go away.

Grim: You can leave the engine fan in place you just machine the impeller off the stock water pump!

The thing that would make me hesitate is the 2000 hr lifespan of the electric motor!

I'm not a big fan of electric fans to replace the engine driven fan, the way I figure it if the engine fan is sucking power i'll crank the boost a touch and be happy with my aircon running on 40C days idling in traffic :).

I just replaced my GE fan with the Aussie Hot Climate GTE fan and it moves a stack more air at idle!

good info. very good info. thanks fellas. looks like i'm sticking with the stock fan for now. i'm not concerned with the power loss, i just like the idea i had for the electrics. (i had a setup in mind where i could unclip them and just slide them out for more room to work. but, whever, screw it, i'm staying with the stocker)

IJ, you certainly could, but that would invalidate the idea of being able to cool the car with the engine off, as your fan wouldn't run. I'm looking at the electric water pump + electric fans as a unit - no point running one without the other.

grimjack i am going with the electric pump and fans reason being the pump is temp controlled and therefore alters the speed to warm and cool the engine via a contol unit on the dash you want it to run cooler you got it and vice versa

they have just brought out an uprated up that flows 1350 g/p/h so if that dosen't keep it cool combined with uprated rad and two 13" fans nothing will :naughty:

Keep us posted on how well that works for you - and on what kind of ambient temps you are running it in.

I know lots of people with electric fans that have no problems around here... where 25 degress C is considered hot. I also know lots of people with electric fans that have problems where the ambient temps are much higher.

Grim: I thought the whole idea of the EWP was for consistant on demand coolant circulation?

Once the motor is off it's not adding heat so the fan is only going to speed up the cool down but hooking the pump to a timer circuit on it's own would prevent heat soaking the coolant.

If needs be you could wire the stock Aircon fan/s in to speed the process up.
(I have mine controlled by the Wolf)

Having said all that I'm still not keen on the 2000 hours lifespan thing!
(hmmmm just did a quick calculation I could drive to Sydney and back every 2nd weekend for 5 years before the pump Motor would die! around 242000 kms so not that bad I guess)

I'm pretty sure the electical motor isn't going to kick the bucket at 2001 hours, either. :)

My primary reason for this would be preventing heat soak - which admittedly would be a tough thing to do, even if you get all that heat out of the engine, it's still in the bay...

Heatsoak as in the fuel system?

If so you could try a small Cooler like I'm using on the powersteering and hook a fan up to it on the Fuel return hose then wire it all on a timer to recirculate the fuel for XX mins.

If just heatsoak in general stock we're doomed as the Hood seals work so well there's no place for it to escape (good argument for vents up in the corners near the screen base)

I think it was around the $200 AUD mark but it's well worth it!
(anything that improves the cooling system in our cars is worth it's weight in gold)

Grim: Another thought came to me while I was working... In our cars the fuel pump doesn't run until the motor is cranking, If you're concerned about the heatsoak issue/hard starting when hot you could wire in a "purge" button that you press for a second or so before you try to start it this will flush the fuel rail and fill it with liquid fuel instad of vapour.

Just need a 12v fused source wired to the Fuel Pump Relay on the inner guard.

group a supra, are you going with Craig Davies pump? I was considering this EWP since last year when I first read about that pump and controller. I sent e-mail to Spa Technique asking price quote and shipping, they did not reply and I left this idea for the next year. Water pump in stock location, like Miezere for mk4 would be the best, but I am not aware about anything like that for mk3. IMHO pump controller is the must for street vehicle to prolong pump's life and save gas.
After looking at 7MGTE cooling system I think if somebody is going to use Craig Davies EWP in the lower rad pipe he has to reroute 2 pipes to the suction side of the pump:
1. Turbo cooling line if turbo water cooled
2. Heater return line

Vlad: I don't understand the need to reroute anything if you're installing it in the lower hose?

Wouldn't it just circulate everything as stock?

The Turbo will thermo siphon after the motor is shut down.
