Do mechanics, car audio installers, etc, like working on your car?

Because it's OLD, or NOT STOCK, or HAS OLD WIRING... whatever... I've heard a million stories.... like fucking get over it and do your job asswipe.

Sorry I had to rant... Thanks for your time ;)

The mechanic I used to bring my car to liked to work on it for some reason. He'd always ask me how my car is doing and when he can work on it next. But now I do my own work on it.

The guy's at Petro Can used to say how my car was very hard to work on, and how the parts were hard to find etc... I admit it might be hard, but they found all the parts, and still overcharged me anyway. If people complain too much, just stop going like I did, they'll only miss the cash you would have spent.

I do my own work... it seems anyone here at a shop will mess it up... no one here knows the mkiii's... so I started teaching myself a few years ago and then found this site which is amazing for any help you could ever possibly need...

Replacing components for upgrades, etc. I'm comfortable doing minor things but nothing major (I wouldn't be able to replace my own headgasket for example, not yet at least.)

But things that require troubleshooting several components, I'd rather just get someone else to do it. like the AC system getting to work was a big pain in the ass, cost me a small fortune, but not something I would like to do myself. I don't like hunting down electrical issues either, I'd rather just pay someone else to fix it.

If someone who you are paying is bitching about working on it I have one piece of advice:

TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE!

As a former shop owner I can tell you that I would never bitch (nor allow one of my guys to bitch) about working on a customers car.

I cant say I have ever heard of complaing about a car, but a few techs would avoid those old Previa mini vans if they could.

Especially something as easy as an old Toyota. It is some of their new stuff that sucks ass.

WOOHOO first post!! No mechanics I know complain about older Toyotas. I now have personal experience of how easy they are to work on. I came to own my Supra after owning three Mitsubishis:3d_frown: . two 1991 Eclipses and one Galant VR4, and compared to those POS's (okay maybe the GVR4 is respectable) the MKIII is a treat to work on. I replaced the head gasket as soon as I got it as well as the water pump, timing belt and all the other associated components. I couldn't believe that I could actually access just about every bolt from above the engine compartment:) Amazing.
I think the difference in engineering development culture and brainpower can really be seen when comparing these types of things.:)

I used to take my car to a mechanic who's ex gf had a mk3.He cut his head open when he was removing my turbo (spanner slipped and clunked him)
He kept complaining about supras but deep down i knew he loved them...Then i stopped being lazy and started doing all my work myself. 3 engines,3autos,1manual conversion,2 bhg's and ive never looked back.

Complaining about working on your customers car is bad, advising them of possible difficulties is not. It's part of the deal when you take on an older car though. I used to work on beaters sometimes at Good Guys and I would just let people know up front about possible parts that may crack when removed or pre-existing problems that they might blame us for later on. But I would never complain to a customer about working on their car. I let them know about things that were difficult to do but then I show them that it came out great. Save the complaining for after they leave! :yelrotflm We know what we are getting into on mk3's cause we work on them every day, but some mechanics hate them because there are so many things that can go wrong.

The only times I paid someone to work on my car was when I got it painted and they gave me a few compliments on it.

When I got emissions done, the kid was like in love with my car. He kept asking me all different questions about it. I ran into him a few days later when he was driving. He had an older celica. Of course I had to show him what my car can do. haha

I couldn't get anyone to work on my car.
Nobody would. NOBODY. I got turned down by every place I went when I first bought it. They all said "Turbocharged cars are too complicated and we don't work on them. They're just too delicate."

I've worked on it from day one, and will continue to do so because everyone in my area WILL bitch if it's not a LeSabre. Also if I fuck up, I know what I did wrong. If they fuck up, it'll be a long lie and coverup and excuses excuses.... I'd just rather do my own work, on any of my cars for that matter.

ive never heard of a regular mechanic say they like supras... its annoying.. even when i was working at toyota they all said they wouldnt touch it. and my car is basically stock... but yet the mechanic that i bring my car to for performance stuff likes it. he knows the potential in the motor :) i do all my own work except for stuff i cant do... like welding and such. but yea a lot of mechanic's are dinks lol...

I think the real reason they don't want to work on the car is that everything on a 7m-gte is very time consuming and people don't want to pay what the mechanic would have to charge for his time. Most mechanics are $75 an hour so even a basic job like changing spark plugs on a Supra might cost hundreds of dollars, and there are lots of hoses and/or wires that can crack or break in the process if they are not super carefull.

We are talking about general mechanics here...

Doing a simple spark plug change a "non supra" guy could possibly break:
accordian hose
lawnmower cover
wiring harness
coil pack wiring
pcv hoses
temp sensors
fan shroud
strip plug holes
crack iac hoses

Ya but a mechanic will charge you for everything. If the spark plugs are a 30 min. job in the book you get charged the say-40 bucks. But if removing the 3000 pipe is listed as a 15 minute job-tack on another 20 bucks. The throttle linkage...another 20 bucks... etc.
I know a guy who ran a small garage and that's how they do it sometimes with difficult cars. From our point of view its a rip-off and unfair, but that's how they get paid.

Kurt I know what you mean. There are dozen's of Mustang garage's and ricer shops... but No-one who will do good work on our cars.
