Differential or Driveshaft?

I have a few issues with my sup that i need to address. first off it this vibration from the tunnel / rear of car. only happens after 20mph and vibrates at different frequencies after that. My differential has about 1/8 to 1/4 of slack from the input shaft. It get's annoying to drive because it "clunk's" that 1/4 of a turn when i drive during takeoff, pressing in the clutch , shifting, clutch kicking, etc. i checked to see if my DS is twisted and it looks all good.

Have you checked the center bearing?

Start where jdub said. My center bearing did that clunk noise, then went bang:biglaugh:. Needless to say I have a new d shaft. There is video of the noise from my car on here somewhere.

Can you order this bearing from a local parts shop or only the dealer? I think I have this same problem lol

dealer only iirc. i know the auto zone one the tabs are in the wrong spot and would have to be cut and welded in the right spot or your drive shaft angle will be wrong.

is the center bearing for an auto the same as a manual? i have an auto DS leftover.

I have a very similair clunk during takeoff and shifting (basically anytime I call for a raise in rpm) but I have a 1 piece aluminum ds. It sounds exactly like someone hitting two pipes together. But I have no real vibration until 80mph... So my only guess is my diff.

Or the uni-joints. If you are getting vibration from a one piece DS, it's out of balance or it does not have a damping tube inside (or both). Typically a one piece will have a natural resonance that becomes obvious at 70-80 MPH...they all have some vibration on this car due to length. A well made one will minimize the effect. Who made it?

A clunk, possibly from a failing bearing, or U-joints is a good excuse
to buy a one piece drive shaft :naughty:

Could be half shafts, or your diff housing mounts.
Pray that it isn't your subframe (cracked).

Well Once again jdub is amazing. That clunk was my ujoint slowly being ripped off. Attempting to find who made the shaft failed (all I know is it's from a group buy from a 1st batch of lighweight ds's, previous owner bought)
brought it to Toyota to see what they thought and they referee me to a machine shop who's rebuilding it for about $120

my auto DS is gone. i think it got tossed out. i called a DS shop nearby and they say they need a measurement. something about a flange. will it be easier to ust bring in the 2pc from my car?
