Ok, so I bought my 89 supra Targa T as a toy. First things first... I Replaced the head gasket. now Im addicted and she's not behaving.

Bought her for a song from a kid in town who blew the HG, so he replaced the engine with a jap engine, then blew that headgasket. ugh, idiot. I amassed a few parts, picked up a fresh head with NA cams, shimmed it properly, got some ARP studs and a bucket of that nasty NAPA carb cleaner.....
one weekeend later the car has a new headgasket, removed the rest fo the emissions crap (cats still in place). Finally drove the car and I instantly fell in love. This aint no MR2. This babys got torque. The kind of torque that will a little help will shove your testicles up your torso and into the back of your throat when you mash the long pedal. I like it. (keep in mind Im used to the whopping 1.6 liters of fury that was my old turbo MKI MR2) I like it so much I bought a DDP, a test pipe, some new plug wires along with the rest of the tune up, a set of staggered Work wheels and tires, a turbonetics hybrid turbo with all the lines, an electric fan, an upper rad hard pipe and Im about 2 days away from picking up some intercooler hardpipes. :) The fun parts are in the trunk waiting to go on. And Ive only had the pig for about a month! So much for the MR2 addiction, I think Im officially a Supra guy now.

Enter the problems....
Idle is non existent. The car likes to die at idle after its warmed up. so I checked all vaccuum and boost lines. were good there. checked timing with the jumper... hmm, cant seem to get it past 15. somethings off here. I check codes... YAY! progress.

Code 42 Speed sensor. ok, no biggie, my speedo doesnt work. a quick search tells me the sensor is behind the speedo... replacing the broken speedo cable should fix it. no problem.

Code 43 Starter cicuit... hmm, thats odd, she starts fine every time. quick search says check your grounds, so I do. I even added a couple of extra ground straps just inc ase. things are good in this department for now.

Code 51 sensor... hmm... time to check the TPS. so Im doing that in the morning. Took some notes from the online repair manual while I was researching the problem earlier.
Then I cleared the codes. Ill check them again in the morning after driving it around some.

Heres whats bugging me... aside from overheating the car had no idle problems before doing the headgasket. Engine pulls stronger now that its firing on all cylinders, but something is amiss here. Aside from the idling problem the car ran good until tonight, Ive started to notice a bit of a miss under boost. nothing severe, most people wouldnt notice it, but it wasnt there earlier today so Im concerned. Boost is fine, right between 4 and 8 on the dash. (oh yeah, I bought a boost gauge too, gotta pay for it this weekend.)

Anyways, now that Ive given you guys my brief introcustion Id like to get some words of wisdom from those familiar with the 7M electronics and see if anyone has battled these particular issues before.

Im dying to get the good parts on there, but I refuse to modify until the car is running right. Im taking the opportunity to send off the downpipe, test pipe and new turbine housing the be ceramic coated, but I want to be ready to throw them on once they get back in a week or so. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Have you checked every part of your cooling system? Elaborate on how it overheats, what happens, when it does, etc.

The idling and miss problems could be attributed to a boost leak...that's where I would look first, it could also be caused by your TPS being bad or out of spec as well.

no no no... it doesnt overheat anymore. I USED TO overheat before I did the head gasket and studs. Cooling system is fine.

boost pipes are all flexible with no cracks or anything. no vaccuum leaks that I can find. Ive tried the propane and the carb cleaner methods with no issues found. Ima check the TPS in the morning. I think youre right on that one.

If you got a jdm head on there it is blocked off at the back of the head, no need to block it off on the side.

I just cut the flange off the egr valve and weld the little hole in it closed. Easy and free!

Its a US head. Car came with a Jap engine so I dont have an old EGR to do that to. :( intake mani is Jap so I cant really run emissions back on it. I made a temp plate, but trust me... it wont work for very long. And I KNOW its leaking some. The second head I had that I swapped in when I did the HG is a US inatke/exhaust manifolds and block are jap.

yep tps is the consensous here, change it first and see what happens. also double check your codes, maybe you missed counted. also check over you ic piping again. i remember i had a boost leak one time i looked all over, when my buddy came by he found it fairly quick, its good to get away from it and look again later when your not aggrevated. lol.

Tested the TPS today, results = either the TPS is not functioning or Im measuring the clearance at the wrong screw. LOL.
I reset the codes, Ill check it her ein a little while when I gof ro a drive and see if it still throws the same codes.
In the meantime Im gonna call Todd on Monday and order a new TPS cause it seems to have failed the continuity test.
Appreciate the help guys, its nice to know I wasnt going down the wrong path after not messing with toyotas for quite a while. Ill repost again after rechecking the codes and trying the new TPS.

I would say drive down south and I'll getcha another TPS but I'll be gone most of the day, but I think I may be headed up to indy later this evening (greenwood actually) and I could try to find a used TPS for you to try before you go out and buy another one...

Give me a ring if you're interested, 812-614-3697 - Matt, and I'll double check and make sure I'm still heading up that way.

The stock wheels on that car... they were in good shape, no?

Sent you a PM Matt.
Anyways, thanks to all for confirming my suspicions.
Mainly wanted to introduce myself and the car outside of the midwest forum.
Thanks for the help.
