long story short: had the GTE rebuilt, blew the head gasket just around 1500 miles on the break in. HG failure indicated failure due to detonation. the copper ring around the water jacket at the number 6 cylinder blew out away from the bore.
what the car does: while boosting, almost always in a lower gear, such as first and second the car will sound like it is "coughing" rapidly with a SLIGHT loss of power on boost. if i roll into the throttle in 3rd 4th or 5th the car wont generally do this. initial break in i was running with an open down pipe, everything else stock. the power loss was dramatic. however i stood on the gas and the HG blew after 1500 miles as stated earlier.
steps taken to correct this: replace kinked fuel feed hard line with SS braid. while i was at it i added an aeromotive FPR with more -6an SS braided line. removed FPD.
car now only does this while boosting in first gear. added a 2.5 inch upper IC hard pipe with greddy type s BOV. car does it again almost as bad as before.
replaced injectors with 550ccs and lex AFM. ran the car with 550s with stock AFM, problem seemed to not be there however i didnt drive it much like that. only to the shop to pick up the lexus meter.
installation of lexus meter, car drives fine, idle was a little rough however after playing with the fuel pressure it idles nice.
car continues to do this.
what should i do? it feels and sounds like the spark is cutting out? however its doing the same thing that it was doing when the HG blew. like its reaching for fuel. or bad gas.
i checked the gap on the plugs and they are at .40, to large so i will be fixing that tomorrow. i run sunoco 93 octane fuel but will try mobile tonight. timing is set at 10 degrees.
what does my problem sound like? is it detonation? preignition? an ignition problem related to the spark plugs?
i will be checking the timing again, and replacing the spark plugs. if that dosnt help i will be replacing the fuel pump with a walbro. the fuel pump has never been changed (1986.5 model year)
fuel filter has been changed as well. i also dont have an EGR.
