decking? Reliability and BHG?

So i know decking increases compression of the engine. I run an 88 7-MGE with maual trans in the 24 hours of Lemon series. I am wondering what decking would do for power - but much more importantly, does it reduce relaibility and longevity of the engine, and particularly does it make a BHG more likely.

We have to keep these things on the track for 14- 24 hours, so far the engine has been stone cold reliable - with over 200 hours of racing, without ever opening up the motor. But if we go the decking of the head route - what are the reliability consequences?

Are you running stock HG now? You could deck the block, machine the head and go with a good MHG and be ok with a little more compression, but you really shouldn't take much off the block or head. There are right ways to increase compression and taking material off the block/head is not one of them. Also, like SRZMK3 said, you'll have to run 91/93 pending your altitude. Gains would be minimal.

I would go through all that work if you're really after power. If you want to make it more reliable by using a MHG instead of a stock gasket, then ok.

Thanks guys,
we have had zero problems with the stock head gasket - 15 races, over 200 hours of road course racing , never once a head gasket issue - in fact, we have never opened up the engine except to put in ARP connecting rod bolts after race #1, since then it has been gas and go!

as for decking - seems to be lots of added potential problems for very little gain - we will stay stock - can't argue with results!

look like your 7m is strong, I would not do anything to it.
