Best is just determined by the amount of $$ you have and reachable goals. Both engines work fine. The 7M will cost $$ to address "flaws," and the 2J will cost $$ because of swap costs/work.

If the 7M is still running, I'd keep it while I collect 2J swap parts over time. When the time comes, just pull 7M & swap 2J in, with hopefully little down time. Last thing you want is for either swap to run into problems, leaving your MKIII on jackstands for months, or even years.

Carefully consider the cost if you plan a swap or an engine rebuild. A lot of people underestimate how much it costs for a basic swap, or they go for a swap and 700hp all at once and end up never finishing for years or giving up and parting out. Take whatever the price of the engine "swap" is from the engine importer and double it to figure the cost installed and debugged.

I'd also like to add that if you have an overheated or knocking 7M in the car, in my opinion that is the one situation where a swap is the only logical option. Otherwise just stick with the 7M if it hasn't been overheated or run too low on oil.

They can achieve the same numbers.

Indeed they can, even an SR20 can achieve 500whp.
But the costs are huge, and not to mention durability is very limited.
If 7M was a great engine, none would ever replace it for å JZ.

2j anyday over a 7m.

I hope this does not turn into a contest... Both engines have their pros and cons, let’s leave it at that please...

Likes it has been said, it all depends on how much money you have to invest, and your power goals.

I'm building a 7M for my other shell mainly because it’s cheap and parts are readily available. I can jump on here and find any parts that I don’t have rather quickly.

Another option is the 2JZ-GE NAT on 7M-GTE electronics. This is a great swap, simple, cost effective, and if the engine does go you only have to source a cheap GE engine.

BTW, going 2JZ-GE is a nice, less-expensive option. A 2JZ GE "running" engine can be had for less than $500. Making it fit is similar to the TT, except a TT engine set is ~$1500. You get ~230 HP (same as 7M turbo) and you get to take your time to either NA-T, or replace the head (and associated HW) towards a standard TT engine.

I'd use "as-is" and not try to go NA-T or anything else right away. I have used the NA block several times in place of the TT block. I am just using TT pistons/head/oil pump, etc.

No one engine is better than another. Just depends on your goals and resources towards meeting them.
