hey ya'll

i've currently got a compaq nx9010 but i don't really want to use this laptop for datalogging and tuning... if i accidently place it in the wrong place on the seat it might block the fans and then i'll have a nicely melted laptop lol

so i'm looking for a small laptop... doesn't have to be fancy... just be able to datalog from the zeitronix wideband and later on i'm adding an emanage.. so it's gotta do that too

what do you guys currently use.. or suggest to use?

Thanks :D

Damn, that reminds me: make custom fan-mount for laptop. I don't want mine to fry when in the car, either! I plan to make a slide-tray, or quick-dismount rails for the laptop in the glove compartment. I have relocated my lighter to the glove compartment area, since nobody is allowed to even SAY "cigarette" in my car. well, and I have a power inverter that I want to mount in that area for power to the laptop. This won't happen until I have the 2JZ, and an AEM - so we're talking "a long time", but I am still happy that you mentioned the burden of heat, especially since I live in Florida!

I was thinking of making a removable stand to position the laptop on the passenger side of the center console. It would be much like the police cars with the computers. If i do make one, i would have a swivel mount so the passenger can angle the screen their direction for tuning and such. I know ebay has some if you are looking for ideas...

Hey Streetknight - how about doing a writeup on building a car PC? I recall Shawn did something similar on the old forums, but I can't find that info anymore... and technology has improved a whole lot for the purpose with the new form factor boards you can buy these days.

The NEC Ready is an extra small notebook - less than half the size of a regular notebook. More like a Palm device, except with enough computing power to be considered a real computer.

It's still small enough to easily fit in the glovebox with lots of room to spare.

I am running a m10000 via motherboard with m1-atx power supply, lilliput 7" vga monitor, hauppauge tv/fm usb tuner, slim dvd drive in the glove box, soundblaster audigy usb, wireless g card with 8db antenna and a 80gig hd with 512mb ram. I do data logging from my zt-2 wideband and I LOVE it! Check out mp3car.com for info on all this stuff.

I have also tried the zt-2 with a serial to usb adaptor to a laptop and it worked excellent.

my setup displays the zt-2 info with no lag what so ever. It's a 1ghz embedded processor and it is fast enough for most applications and dvd playing but not for gaming. I think anything faster then 800mhz would be fine. 256mb of ram is the bare minimum for xp.

yeah i have the m900 an it runs at 933mhz with 512mb of ram. and i can play the old quake with out a problem and watch what ever dvd i want with out no frame drops. the only thing thats wrong with the epias is they are expensive compared to a m-atx board with a 1.2-1.8mhz amd. which would run smooth, and play games.

well i think i found a solution to my problem.. i'm gonna use my existing laptop and install this stand and bracket into my car
the bracket bolts to the stand which then bolts to the passengers seat bolt.. so should be fairly stable :D

removable when i want it on show... and even if it is still in there.. it's not as bad as a piece of metal swivel stand thats on the dash lookin all horrid or a wooden box lol
