well i ahve taken my dash out like 8 time or more since i have had my car and all ways said to my self i should make it stroung or at lest finsh the welds on the man brace tube or paint it

well i fianly did it i finshed up the welds and drill spoted the main tube fpr more spot wedling

befor hit again the ground it was not soild sounds at all but after the re fished welding it makes nice soild sound whenit hits the ground ti so much stiffer now

so i have to say if you have welder and you got it out so this it pretty much free to do and will make diff in some way i thinks and if not it not liek ti was hard to do but ti much stiff now

Your talking about the Big cross bar under the dash and reinforcing the welds and now it sounds much more solid then before the reinforcement.

Do you have any pictures?

I understood ya perfectly Nash. I actually just finished painting my brace yesterday. I did not add to the welds however. I did think of doing it but decided not to because I likely will not even use the brace in the future.

I understood what you wrote Nash. I was actually looking at that bar yesterday, particularly the welds. What the hell was toyota thinking by not going all the way around?

I have painted mine black but I think I will brace it up too. Especially where it bolts up to the tranny tunnel.

Syst: I would not remove that cross brace all together because it does more than just securing the harness in place imo.. :)

Awesome, yet again, Nash. You are always thinking outside the box. Post some pics up if you can. A visual is always helpful. I just had mine painted, but maybe now I'll have it sandblasted and attack it with a MIG...

wtf^^ where did my post go?

I just checked and a moderator deleted it as it added nothing to the thread.

PM ckanderson to discuss if you have a problem with it.

You're talking about that big ugly rusty bar under the dash! WTF was toyota thinking when they decided to NOT paint that bar???
I wonder why mine hadn't rusted? It was brand new looking, with the smallest spot of rust... but nothing CLOSE to my parts car.. man, that thing is gross.
It's just strange. My 90, with 170k mi on it was rust free, but my 89 parts car with 105k mi on it was disgusting...

Is this bar a source of ground at all? I was wondering that after it got painted...

Someone can feel free to correct me if im wrong, but i beieve the dash brace was welded like that on purpose from the factory so that it would absorb the energy of a side impact better....i think if it was fully welded it wouldnt "absorb" the energy as much, and i dont think toyota would not weld it if it were to put thousands of drivers in danger, but again, i may be wrong....

theres no excuse for not painting it though :)

When I remove the brace it will be because structurally speaking it is no longer needed. I do not beleive the brace is meant to be fully welded, meaning adding welds may not make it safer from a side impact perspective.

well i know braceing and finshing the weld wonte cause it to be unsafe cause if it was to hit at the bracing you whould be dead

my idea on this thing is brecing and keep the dash up

the fire wall it self is 2 layr meatl with lots of stamping for strangth

and prop to toyota is they glued ont eh last plat of steel so the mealt now is strung and will stop the motor coming thorugh the fire wall

I come from a land down under
It's stitch welded so if there is a failure in a weld it stops at that weld and doesn't continue all the way through causing the brace to fail.
(look at a pro seam welded shell to see the same)
