Spring is almost here in Wisconsin, and I am now another year older. It's been almost 3 years since I purchased the infamous '2JZUL8R' from Nick S., and I'm guilt stricken by how little I actually drive her. Less than 1000 miles since May 16, 2011, and that might be a few hundred high. I'm in my mid-30's with a wife, 2 kids, a dog and a cat. I don't have time for much activity these days that isn't family oriented, and I'm fine with that. What I'm not sure I'm fine with is having such an awesome, unique and powerful specimen of a Supra in my garage and at my disposal, and limiting her time outside to a 10 mile nightly jog every once in a blue moon, and maybe a freeway jaunt to the office once per year (if I am 100% certain that the weather will cooperate).

The money is not a factor, meaning that I don't have to sell her, but if I did I would be firm as a mofo on the price. I mean, this is one of the most famous MKIII Supras that I'm talking about, of which I paid $20k for in 2011. Would I be able to fill the void left by this car leaving it's garage stall? I'm honestly not sure. I would go from Iconic to run-of-the-mill, no matter what replaced her. I go through these phases where I want to sell her so that someone else can enjoy her, and then the next day I'm wondering what the hell I was thinking. Sure, I would likely "upgrade" to a B7 RS4, but at what cost? And is that truly an "upgrade"? Proceeds from the sale of an Icon, plus cash out of pocket = less reliable, not as fast, arguably ordinary in appearance. F it, I'll just buy a boat and take the kids tubing and fishing.

So Supramania, I ask you to talk me into or out of the sale of an Icon. Why should I keep her? Why should I sell her? Would a sale for "market" value even be plausible, given that I haven't seen an MKIII go for anywhere near $20k. Even if I was content with $15k, I'm not sure the right buyer exists out there. Maybe I'm wrong. Let me know if I'm crazy for considering selling her, or crazy for not selling her yet.

Thanks Supramania. Now for the Iconic autoporn (I can't get my work PC to upload pics, but they will go up tonight).

A week after you sell it, you'll regret it. Even if you don't drive it very often, you still have that option. Once it's gone and you've spent the money, you'll be heart broken. I don't drive mine more than once every couple of months and I do think about selling it, but every time I sell one, I look for another. This is my fourth supra. I'm in my fourties with two kids and I don't get over wanting to go down the road and do some six hundred horsepower boosts. I think it's in our blood. I drive my sc300 when I'm not working but I still love to get in the supra once in a while.
I'm not sure which direction you'll go, but I do know a high horsepowered supra is hard to let go of and even harder to replace with something else.

It would be so hard to get what you want for it. In this market, extremely unlikely you could sell an MK3 for around the price of an MK4...

Keep it, pass it on to one of your kids

I agree with suprahero, there aren't many other cars out there with that type of reputation. I hope that once I am done with grad school that I can build my supra into one like yours or like others on this site. Plus, I'm sure this has been mentioned before but Mk3 Supra's are a thinning herd, especially one like the you own. These cars will only grow in rarity.

Drive it to work. Certainly they have some sort of summer there in Wisconsin. I've been to Minnesota plenty of times in the summer, so I know that Wisconsin gets some nice weather..

If it gets rained on, for the most part sups are water proof ;)

Really, why buy a car to park it in the garage? Whats the point? My car is insured properly and I know one day my knees won't let me get in or out of it, so I enjoy it now. Bugs will hit it, birds will poop on it, paint will get chipped, someone will hit with their door. Get over it and enjoy. All that can be fixed.

Take the wife and kids. Kids usually fit in the back seat. If not, stick 'em in there sideways. Leave the cat and dog at home. They'll get over it ;)

You'll regret the sale. If money isn't a concern keep it and pass it on. A mk3 supra that clean and powerful is rare and a steal at 15-20k.

If money is a concern then selling makes sense.

I have to agree with everyone here. I think you should keep it as well, you will want it back as soon as you see the taillights drive off from you. It's not like it is depreciating in your garage like a new car would, so that's always a plus. I have no idea how old your kids are, but one day they will be old enough to enjoy the Supra on drives with you if they aren't old enough already. Try and drive it to work once a month at least, or if your kids play sports drive it out to a soccer game or whatever, take the car out when the weather is nice and enjoy it.

Also I'd love to see pictures of the car.

I agree with everyone on keeping it. Is it just too nice for you to enjoy? Like are you worried about damaging it or what are your thoughts? I mean what were your intentions to begin with to drive it or look at it? haha.

Obviously my intentions were to drive it. However, shortly after purchasing it my 10 mile commute turned into a 60 mile commute.

Here are some pics. I don't have any of my own pics on my iPad, so I had to resort to pics via google search. I'm fairly certain they won't disappoint.

That 60 mile commute sounds like an excellent opportunity to give the car the time needed to justify keeping it. Plan on a Friday commute in the Supra once or twice a month or something. Make it a special drive once in a while.

I'll add that if you reach a point where it's no longer special or you just don't care about it, then it's time to sell. So long as you still get a grin from romping up to redline on the on-ramp and you can still walk out to it in the parking lot and think, "Damn, that does look good, doesn't it." you should hang onto that beautiful and functional piece of art/machinery.

I've used the fire breathing pic of your car as one of my wallpapers on my computers and phones for a while. Sexy as hell.

Some reasons for enjoying the Supra:

1. Driving it
2. Taking the car to shows and meets to share your pride
3. Working on it
4. Simple admiration of the car

If you still get enjoyment from the Supra because of a reason, above, perhaps it's worth holding on to. If you dont, how do you get enjoyment from the Supra to make keeping it worthwhile, Ben?

We'll, I'm a tad younger, two kids, supra that's about 1/20th of what yours is. Put mine up for sale last Friday because I thought it was time to put my hobby away for awhile until we get into a bigger house and get my wife a new car. Then the plan was to just find something like u got there and buy it later. Got 3 calls the first day I posted it about the car. So many so fast I panicked and took it back off for sale for a day until I convinced myself I was actually really ready to let it go. It's back up for sale but I know I'm gonna feel lost for awhile without it. Figured if I can stay busy enough with work, things around the house like yardwork or doing things with the wife and kids I can make the time that I won't have a supra seem to go by faster. But I know I'll be looking and thinking a lot about the next one. I can say if I had what u had that would be it, the quest would be over and I would have all I need and I would hold on to it with a death grip. Maybe once that happens to a guy where u have what u want we just forget what we have and see it in a different light idk

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I've driven my Supra less than 1000 miles since I've own it. Only maybe 100 miles since the new engine and standalone install. It just sits while I pay for a tags, insurance and a garage to store it. The only reason I still have it is I know it'll never bring enough $$$ to make me sell it and I can't stomach the thought of parting out what took literally hundreds of hours of research and busted knuckles to build (not to mention a shit-ton of cash). It's gonna happen sooner or later though. Push come to shove. :wtc:

And shit, if the OP would part with that beauty for $15k, I'd be lucky to get a snickers bar and a ride home.

Ive been in a situation similar to this. I however have separation issues so the moment I consider selling the car is very short lived. I would just rationalize out what the fringed benifit of selling the car would be. Honestly, if you don't have to sell the car it wouldn't be very long before that regret kicks in. Then it will be one of those shoulda-coulda-woulda situations. Not to mention the car is absolutely beautiful ;)

I love your car.. lol. Its like my cars sister :)

2 thoughts... one.. its just a car. As a MK3 "enthusiast" that's a silly thing to say, but that is the reality. Emotionally I am attached to my car... practically its not a smart car to be attached to for various reasons (most relating to age)...
two... its a Toyota Supra MK3. This is a rare breed. I think of them as a Japanese Corvette, but they produced far less numbers than the actual corvette.. so its actually rarer. Its a unique and beautiful vehicle that lets you stand out from the crowd and very few own one, especially one like yours!

So.. imho... you have a "pinnacle" Mk3 that we all are trying to achieve. If you can enjoy it, do.

Just try not to be the guy who in ten years says... "I had that car... wish I had kept it... they are so hard to find now!"

If I didn't have my car or had the cash for a second sitting right now I would snap yours up for 20k in a heartbeat simply because I know the path to get it to where it is. Yours just isn't a typical MK3 to be honest...

Take your time though because you have no pressure to do otherwise.

On a different note.. are you still selling the parts you were selling in 2012?

Sell it if you can. The lack of use is makes it not worth keeping. If you built it you can always take pride in that.

Just to play devil's advocate, I wouldn't say that the lack of use is necessarily a reason to sell something. At least for some people that's the case. For example, I have more cars than I could possibly begin to shake a stick at. One in particular is a 1964 Impala SS. I haven't gotten around to doing anything to it in many years so in essence that is a lack of use. I have had many offers for the car and I absolutely refuse to sell it. The biggest reason is because this was the first car my father ever gave me. Sometimes a dollar value can't be placed on things like that and the same goes for my supra. Once again thats just some people, I for one am one of those people. Just my two cents.

I want a boat that I can take to the coast, but thats gonna run me 25k. What keeps me from buying it is that I dont have time to run down to the coast but 4 or 5 times a year. So im just gonna wait till I have enough time to get down there more. I guess I could buy it a just park it in the drive foe everyone to admire. Now that just doesn't make sense to me.

Now in your case I understand not selling something that was handed down or that you built with your own hands. I dont know if the op built this car or bought it, and if he bought it how much he bought it for. Also I haven't seen any pics. All that would factor in a bit.

My opinion as of now is sell it since he isn't using it.
