i took off accordian hose and found like 1mm of shaft play in my turbo. i wasnt shure if it was allot but when i idle i cant tell if this rattling noise is my heat shield or shaft play. when i hit full boost i can also hear a louder rattling from turbo. but then evens out past 3500 rpm. for those of you who have gone through shaft play is there a way to slow down the deterioration, what other problems will it cause.

well that an easy fix im talking about the shaft play. what are the consequences of waiting till this winter to do something about it. right now its minimal, barely any oil at all in intake i just wanna know what kind of damage it could do, could i get bearing material in my oil lines and into pan?

AJ: It was just a suggestion so you can rule out either the Turbo or the Shield as making the noise ;)!

The way the turbo bearings are meant to work is they have clearance on both the shaft and the housing side and float on oil.
(this is why an idle down is important as you could give it a big boost be spinning the turbo to 100.000+ rpm then shut the oil off=bad things)

When the motor isn't running no oil pressure so you have some play, this is normal.

Check to see if the compressor wheel has been rubbing/touching the housing.

IJ: thnx forgot about the (no oil pressure when engine off) factor. now im sitting still. i need to go thorugh my entire exhaust and put it back together to make sure i got everything torqued down. i wish my town had people in it so i could have shops where i could rebuild stuff.

I've got about 1 mm of shaft play on a turbo with 14k miles on it. Its ok. I also have about one drop of oil that collects on the inlet hose every 500 miles or so....I think that runs out of the turbo when it is off, but I'm not sure. My car has yet to need any oil though :)
