i feel extremely stupid asking this... dunno why. anyhow, i bought a puller kit yesterday to pull out a few things. managed to pull out the steering wheel and the cam gears again just fine.

yet, the real purpose i bought it for was to remove the damper. my question is, is there some type of long tool that holds the screws by touching the ground and stops the damper from turning while i take out the damn bolt that holds it in place (aside from a breaker bar)?

Impact gun, 19mm socket. Or...19mm socket and breaker bar. Position bar so it rests on ground or frame or use a big prybar, then hit the starter with the key. The engine will turn in the direction that will break the bolt loose.:biglaugh:

mrnickleye,
That's what I did when the 800ft-lbs of torque from my impact gun didn't work. I took my breaker bar, stuck a pipe on the end, stood it on the ground and hit the starter.
Scary...........

just imagining hitting the starter actually makes me shiver.... plus, i disconnected a whole lot of stuff and took out part of the clutch system, so no can do. :(:(

guess ill have to steal a long pipe from somewhere on the street and add it to the one i already have to have a 10 foot extension to pull on with my neighbors.

The starter trick works very well. Just don't rest the breaker bar on the wrong side of the engine bay... it'll swing around and smash the snot out of your battery / fuse area.

If you don't have access to the starter anymore, your next best bet is an impact gun. Failing that, either put the tranny back on, or pull the engine, take off the oilpan, and wedge a block of wood or two between the crank and the block.

live in an apartment, i wish i could take the tranny and engine out. so i have to do it the extra hard way. i just might put 2 breaker bars to hold the pulley tight. then with a big socket and wrench, ill put some long pipes to get more distance and ask 2 neighbors to help me pull on it. that should loosen it up. if it doesnt, ill be surprised.

I think you're going to just be waiting until you hook whatever stuff you took out back up. Using the starter is super easy and it take like 2 min to get it off start to finish. I'd reccomend that.

Did you say you took out some clutch parts?? Is the flywheel exposed?
If so, you could wedge a prybay or very big screwdriver onto the teeth to hold the crank from turning.
Holding the crank still is one of the hardest things to do when you are using breakerbar on bolt.

Using the starter trick and impact wrench works for getting the bolt off, but you also need to torque that bolt to 195ft-lb when you put it back on. To do that you need to secure the crank. You can put the car in 5th gear and block the wheels on a manual, but for the auto you need some other approach. I built something that looks like the official Toyota SST http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/em/EM_24.html
using a big block of brass and a lathe, but probably most people don't have access to a lathe

I would be a bit nervous about jamming anything in the ring gear, and "just" pulling the oil pan is an 8 hour job with the engine in the car since you have to drop the front subframe. I've read many posts of people having the pulley fall off, and I assume many are not tightening them to 195ft-lbs because they didn't have a way to secure the crank.

I know this is frowned upon by nearly everyone... but they DO make a tool for all these funky things, you could always order it. Only problem is it might be a bit shocking hw expensive it is.

Take out a spark plug and thread in some fine thread nylon rope. Something about 3/8 in diameter at BDC for that piston. Fill the cylinder with the rope, but don't let it fall all the way in!!! Then loosen the bolt until the piston binds agains the rope. Then torque away on the bolt. The crank WON'T turn.
