Well I had tried to get my fuel filter off once before a few years back...I could get the banjo bolt loosened but the other side I just couldn't get undone. I even took it to the dealership and they said they couldn't get it off. Tonight I decided I was going to try again. I doused both the banjo bolt and other side in liquid wrench and wd-40 the night before. When I finally got underneath the car tonight I tried the banjo bolt first, it came right out. The other side is where I had problems. The dealership must of rounded the nut off on the out side. That is probably why they couldn't get it off. I used a line wrench and tried to get the damn thing off but it would just slip around. After about an hour of fucking around with different sized wrenches I ended up bringing out the vice grips. At this point I was out of options. Somehow I got those fuckers up where the filter is and clamped down on the rounded nut. I held the fuel filter in place with a 3/4" wrench. Finally it came loose. After I got it loose I could use a 14mm wrench to turn it, it was just too tight before.

How I got it off:

I changed mine out when I dropped the gas tank for my Walbro install. It took longer to swap out the fuel filter, than the fuel pump. And yes, i rounded 2 or 3 spots on that hardline nut. I wasn't able to tighten it down as much as i would have liked, but, it hasen't been leaking so i'm ok.

Wow rusty! :)

I twisted up my fuel filter line when I was doing my walbro so I know how it goes. I ended up replacing the fuel pump housing and fuel filter to fix that connection. It's not too hard of a job if you drop the tank.

two days before i dropped my tank to do the walbro install, i doused my fuel filter fittings with PB Blast (i love that stuff). when it came time to pull off the filter, (on my 86.5- it was uber rusty, probably the origional filter) i had that sucker off in about ten minutes. the key here (well, at least for me) is preparation. dont just dive into it. prepare the filter to be taken off. dont just go under there, cuss, swear, grunt and groan, and expect it to come off.

the damn thing's been on there for YEARS. of course it's not going to want to pop right off. i dreaded the filter change, then it took like 10 minutes to do, i was plenty happy to say the least. preparation is key.

I have to say I totally agree with you man. PB is what we use at work as well. That stuff would make rust feel like its on a slip and slide with jelly lube. I'll keep that in mind when I do mine. I just wanted to put in a good word for PB.

The fuel filter is probably the gayest and most frustrating part that I have come across on my supra but I did notice a little improvement when changing it. Chances are the filter is loaded with crap and many people say that the fuel filter is a no maintenance item that should last the life of the car but if you can get it off, change it.

People that say that the filter is a non maitenence item...are the people that can't get the damn thing off :)...When I removed mine the fuel that was sitting in ithe filter was brown as hell, no thank you. I also drained my tank and there were bits of sediment in the tank. Later.
