It is underneath it, its screwed into the hinge i think. So to use it you have to open the center console there it is. By the way it only came on 89+ cars.

You need the 89+ console lid, as well as the cup holder, but it will fit right onto your 88 center console.
You can get away without getting a new console lid , you need the '89+ cup holder, hinge, and front clip (that screws onto the lid). There'll be a slight gap with the old lid, but it'll still close with the newer clip.
and it's in the WORST place for driving, shift and BAM you just knocked your drink into the back seat...

I've never had issues hitting it when I shift..
only issue is it doesn't fit medium/large Wendy's cups!

I sit pretty far forward, that's not an easy place for me to grab...

I was thinking of integrating one of the later model GM cupholders in somewhere, that have the nice rubber flanges that adapt to all sizes. But since I'm putting in all new leather and suede, I decided drinks are off limits in my car

The shitty thing is that if your car has airbags too (90+ iirc) that flip box is only like 1in deep. Trusting it to hold a drink is risky business.
I normally use the cup holder for stroring drinks for later, not storing them between sips. Like if I am taking home a fountain drink, it has to be secured somewhere...
