I'm pretty sure I have come to the death whine; boosting at about 18 lbs for a year didn't cuase this; but the constant spikes to 24+ did(shitty mbc)

I can honestly say that is what kills the stock turbo; probably 22 + is what really does it in as it's spinning way to fast for that little shaft.

It still pulls like it did at about 5 lbs  but anything over 5 lbs and it makes the most god aweful sound. My friend said he could hear it almost 4 blocks away..

I haven't had time to take off the accordian hose and check play and such; but once the car is warmed up, if I let it sit for approx. 20-30 seconds idling; I get massive smoke.. a little blue I think and smells bad like oil.

Is that just from the turbo, or should I possibly do a compression check as well once I get the turbo off?

Since I'm going FMIC and FFIM; I guess this is just an omen for a t4 that I have been waiting to pick up but my wife is going to flip if I tell her I just spent 800 on a FMIC and FFIM setup and now i need another 1200 for a turbo setup...

Well, I'll hope for the best when I talk with her after she gets home from work tonight..

I was told by Performance Techniques that the stock CT-26 starts to overspin at 11psi and runs out of air at 13psi. Not sure how accurate this is, but I am suprised you got a year out of it at 22-24psi.

Check your turbo shaft for play to start. If it is sloppy, then the oil is most likely leaking past the shaft seals..

Is there any blowby when you take off the oil filler cap? Do a compression/leak down test if your concerned..

Yea; there has always been a bit of blowby in my IC pipes, but nwo its massive, a small puddle in the lower one and its pretty caked ont he inside of them.

I'm not sure if the stock ct starts to over spin at 11 lbs, but I can tell you the difference between 11 lbs and 22 lbs is like 100 RPM's in spool up time...

Maybe thats what they mean?

I think so, I killed 2 of them very fast at 14psi, (they may have been on the edge of turbo death already)

If you upgrade the compressor wheel to a larger one, they can push much more air/psi at slower turbo shaft speeds without creating counter productive heat and increasing longevity of the turbo.

i've gone through THREE CT26's in the past year. Never ran over 16lbs of boost.

They were not in the best of milage when I got them though. all of them were over 100K miles.

I would say if you get a perfeclty mint stock one it will last at 15lbs for about a year :biglaugh:

I got to find me a mint one. Mattonedime has one for sale on supraforums for $350 shipped. brand new basically.

iifc, i remeber hearing that the stock ct-26 is good till about 16-18 pounds.

i think that they start to loose efficency after about 20 psi. i used to run 15 psi when i had my ebc, and i run 11-12 on a shimmed wastegate. no problems after almost 2 years. the guy before me used to beat it daily!

looks like ill have to remeber where i found this info and post it up. i remeber finding it online after i got the supra and wanted to know a lil more about it.

Yea; all I'm saying is to not let it spike to 22 +; because with the lex/550's it allowed me to run about 16 lbs safely, but if my MBC wasn't set right it would spike to 22-24 and hit fuel cut on 3rd-5th gear pulls consistantly.

So I was searching and I'm bringing this thread back from the dead...
Is it ok to drive the car when I have the "death Whine" I still need to drive it until I can get a new turbo. Will it hurt anything?

It will hurt. You will end up with parts of the bearing in your oil pan and then gall the rod or main bearings from the contaminated oil. Been there done that.

Damn, I just noticed your list of mods, are you really going to risk all that money and time you have in that motor over a dead turbo?

This sucks...What if I keep it out of boost the whole time while driving like under 2200 rpms?
I need a vehicle to drive!!

boost has little to do with what engine RPM is. boost has to do with how much load is on the engine. keep that in mind. you could be at 2000 rpm, and go up a hill, and guess what? yep, your turbo is going to spool and there's nothing you can do about it.
