My friend just picked up an 89 cressida and is about to go turbo. He has 7mgte motor already and has 5 speed engine harness and 5 speed ecu. Would it work with his auto tranny? Or would the auto harness already in car work with auto harness and manual ecu. I searched and searched and only pull threads of everyone going auto to manual. But would manual ecu work with auto trans since i read that autos have separate ecu in car already. If i missed thread please lead in right direction. Thanks

IIRC, the auto ECU will work with the manual harness and tranny, and is probably your best bet with the parts available. The only issue I can think of is the overdrive light will flash constantly, as the plug isn't connected to the tranny, but you can take the bulb out of the cluster if it bothers you.

i recently completed a gte swap in my 91 cressida. none of the 7mge electronics will work with the gte. as far as tranny, u can run a manual with both a manual and auto ecu but u can only run an auto off of a auto ecu.

Rats! I was thinking he had a GTE auto ECU. That's why I said what I said. Doh!

that link is for a na-t swap. if ur just bolting turbo parts on a ge u can still use the ge electronics but u CANNOT have a gte engine and still use the ge harness/ecu. the ge uses a dizzy, the ecu doesnt have the fuel maps for when the motor comes on boost, different ignitor, etc. the gte uses a coil pack system, a cps, the ecu is "calibrated" for boost, etc. its just not gonna work. just get the gte harness, ecu, ignitor and just wire it up instead of cutting corners.

ok thanks. because he already has a manual gte ecu so we were wondering. we haven't began to began the break down process yet though. Car is still being driven. But a friend of mine has 2 w58s that i can practically get for nothing so we may end of just going with a manual setup. but then we would need a supra na driveshaft right. but like i said he already has a 7mgte, manual harness and ecu. just mainly if that ecu would be compatible or kick out a couple extra dollars for auto ecu if he stay auto
