Hello over the week end I installed a replacement cps, just removed the old one and installed the new one in the same place car ran fine but had a miss at idle not a bad miss just a light miss but constant. so I hooked up a timing light timing was advanced 34degres, so I set the motor to tdc remove the cps set the marks reinstall and preceded to set timing via light got the idle to 10degres the cars idles great no more miss fire, but now it miss fires when driving down the street and has major hesitation, it's even worse when the ac is on.

Is the timing belt off or should I remove the cps and reinstall again, this is starting to bum me out

The cam pulleys have a notch on them that points straight up to the marks on the back metal cover. When the engine is at TDC, then install the CPS, with the match marks aligned how TSRM says to align them.

The pop is probably due to idle being a little rich...no biggie...assuming you have the timing set at 10 BDTC with the diag block jumpered per the TRSM.

Did you check for codes?

when i put the light on it the best i can get is 15BDTC which means my timing is advanced i belice that when the timing belt was replaced it was not installed correctly.

That's with the diagnostic block jumpered between E1 and TE1?

Advanced timing like that will also cause the popping you described.

Based on what he' said about the CPS matching the picture I'll bet it's like he said...it's the cam gears and not the CPS.

I just wanted to make sure the diag block was jumpered (common mistake) before making that concluson.

If your cams are out, it's not too hard to fix. Pull off upper radiator hose, upper timing cover, loosen the bolt for the tensioner on the timing belt and shift it over a tooth or whatever you need to do to line up the cam gears.

Would the CPS being off a tooth cause a high idle?

It can if it is advancing the timing. Normally this happens after a re-build...the CPS doesn't "jump" a tooth (due to the helical gearing) like the timing belt can.

Do a search on "high idle" and PM me with the problem.

when i feel board i might take a crack at it,am pretty sure the cams are off a little, my timing is still advanced like 28 should be 13+ based on what the manual says. the head tech at my shop says it won't hert any thing to drive it this way it just as the slite miss at idle only at idle other than that it runs great.

it's just that i work on cars 9hrs a day 5 days a week when i get off work the last thing i want to do is work on my car.
