I am strongly considering a Megasquirt system. and need a few questions answered in order to figure what system will work for me. so here goes..

1. where is the crank angle sensor (CAS) or crankshaft position sensor wheel and what type is it (Optical/LED Sensor? Hall Sensor? VR Sensor? mag sensor?)

2. How many teeth/windows/slots and what orientation does the CAS or crank trigger have? (any missing? all evenly spaced?)

3. Do these engines have a fast idle valve or IAC? If so, how many wires are connected to it? Do you know if it is an on/off, pulse width modulated, thermal, or stepper type?

Thanks

At least get a MAP ecu or Stinger for extreme power and complete control get a wolf or motec ecu.

Megasquirt is just a fancy science project.

it is 24 teeth 1 sync signal 1 sync pulse per every 720° of rotation on the 1JGTE i think the sync event is 70° BTDC there is actualy 12 teeth on it but your complete engine cycle is 24 teeth it is relucter or magnetic sensor i dont remember if it is rising edge or trailing and such you goto kinda play with it Also use the back cam signal as your sync signal its is by #5 piston I hope that helps!

Aaron should chime in at any moment he haves a sale here on his stinger which he is a pro at!

First of all thanks for the info.

I cant afford Motec or any big name standalone. and I dont think there are any Stinger Tuners in South FL. my app is actually a 1jz swap in an S14 Nissan 240sx alot of things are custom so Im trying to keep cost down wherever I can. this guy seems to have done well with his and has less than $180 into his ecu http://www.tamparacing.com/forums/toyota-tech/306273-megasquirted-1jz-inside.html

dude if you dont even know where the CAS is then you will not be able to even begin to understand megasquirt. Best of luck

Reason for that is I dont physically have a 1jz right now, Im coming up from a differnt breedof car and just learning about the JZ engines, Im not just learning about cars alltogether. but thanks for your concern

I don't know an answer to any of those questions except...

AEM ECU > Megastink

AEM makes a good product for SOME people.but I had an experience with them. Couple year ago their Honda boxes were just randomly taking a crap.it wa a big thing and they redesigned it so I waited for the revised model that addressed the issue, I think it was the 30-1010. so now with the new model they didnt just crap out on you anymore.well the problem with the new box was that readings would fluctuate, air temps, coolant temps etc. AEM admited to it being a known problem with that model box, and they said they wouldnt repair them or do a recall, you have to buy a NEW box. thousands of people had that issue and they wouldnt repair it. they wouldnt even offer you the 3rd new box at a discounted price. I dont think I will run another AEM standalone again. MS works well

The Stinger we sell has really nice software. If your dyno tuner has used AEM or any other standalone ecu before, he will have no problem with the Stinger, and in fact, I know he will say he likes tuning it. Part of the reason people in the past said "I only tune xxxx brand", is because the software was so complicated and archaic that it took many hours to figure out how to use it. The Stinger has a 32 bit Motorola processor and surface mount components just like the AEM, and it uses Windows real time software with a serial interface to the laptop. If you don't have a serial port, you can use a $15 usb-serial adapter. The software is free, and you can download it and try it from www.enginemanagement.com.au
I have the pnp harness available, and for $1050 including the harness I think it's the best deal as far as cost vs performance. Now if you are really into tuning and you want a lot of inputs and outputs, then possibly a higher end unit may be worth the money, but remember, the performance will only be as good as the person tuning it.

If I had a dyno shop, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a new standalone, because the next time someone calls I don't tell them "duh....I don't know anything about that one", I tell them "NO PROBLEM! Come on in and we'll strap it up!". Tuning is about making an engine run at it's full potential, regardless of what you use to do it.

ok you got my attention...So stingers interface is similar to AEM's? will it allow me to keep sequential COP ignition? I dont want to convert to wasted spark. and will it work with any GM or MSD 3 bar MAP sensor? My plan is to immediatly ditch the Factory 1jz MAP sensor. what other hardware is needed for this sytem. i.e sensors, triggers or whatever else? also does it have that annoying aem thing where it has to read the crank trigger 3 times before it actually starts the car? and can you show me some 1jz results? I wanna see how people like it.

Just search for "stinger" on this forum. There are a bunch of threads about it recently. It will not do sequential ignition. All sequential ignition does (other then sounding cool) is give you a slightly smoother idle.

Stinger FTW, I got my entire car tuned in about a week (on my downtime). The car runs better than on the stock ECU, and has a ton of features. I really like the user interface too. It rips to redline now..

In my experience so far.. its the needed step between the "Plug n' Play" AEM, and the 100% DIY Megasquirt.

1. where is the crank angle sensor (CAS) or crankshaft position sensor wheel and what type is it (Optical/LED Sensor? Hall Sensor? VR Sensor? mag sensor?)

*Mag sensor/evenly spaced and located at the bottom gear of the timing belt.

There is 2 CAS use the one above the fuel rail next to #5 cylinder the other next to #2 is extra.
#5 is the sync signal!

The crank is 12 teeth so the ecu needs to be set up for 24 since you complete 720° per each sync input & 720° per complete engine cycle.

It uses Mag aka reluctor sensor at the bottom/front of the crank/engine.

BUT you do not need to know all this if you use the plug and play adapter harness provided by driftmotion.
