well when i was taking my head off yesterday i completely forgot about taking the head bolts off in order. i just did them in the rows. did i fuck anything up real bad or should i be okay?

another thing i did was stick a cam gear back on to turn the camshaft so i could get a couple of the head bolts out......so i wouldnt hit any lobes. is it okay to turn them and possibly not have them back in the EXACT same position they were in before i turned them. i put them back as close as i could get, but you never know, they might be a little off.

hopefully i'll be okay with these two possible mistakes, but let me know if i screwed myself over or if there is anything i can do to take car of this.

thanks

I'm pretty sure I didn't take my head bolts off in order either, and after 4K miles, no problem at all. One thing I did do absolutely wrong was removing the cam journals out of order. The valve springs pushed the rear of the cam up at a cockeyed angle in the first couple of journals and I was convinced I had fucked everything up, but didn't. I guess I could have screwed things up by not following the proper orders, but if it was possible to to that I might have gotten got lucky.

As for timing, I can only speak from a one time deal, but I'm pretty sure there's no problem there, either. When you reassemble you will return everything to TDC anyway, so you'll be alright there too.

Neither is bad...just that, tomorrow you'll find your engine in a molten pool of metal. JK... ;)

Tightening the bolts in order is what's important...no biggie

When you put the head back on, you'll have to turn the cam to tighten the bolts. So, you will have to set the #1 cylinder at TDC, install the cam gears (center hole for the pin), and align the mark on each cam gear with the index mark on the cam packing plate. You didn't screw up here either ;)

It's good you asked...makes sure you read the TRSM a couple of times about installing the head.

well thats a big relief.

while its in the shop getting resurfaced, what is the best way to clean all the carbon out of the cylinders and piston tops?

also, the previous owner had painted the nice hks front mount intercooler white for some reason and i want to get it back to the aluminum color. i tried pressure washing it off, but that didnt take much off. aircraft paint remover, wire brush drill bit?????

Most machine shops have a steam type parts washer...cleans the head up really well. Should work on the intercooler too...you could hit it with a brush on paint remover 1st, then get it cleaned. Rinse the inside out with gasoline to remove any oil build up.

Edit: if you use paint remover, test a small area 1st to make sure it doesn't react with the aluminum IC ;)
