I've been a little scared to ask this... considering head gaskets are asked alot on here... I SEARCHED I SEARCHED!! I FOUND ALOT OF GOOD INFO.. just no price.. Sinse toyota didn't call back with an answer to my question I figured i'll ask the 7MGTE supra guys that know a ton more than i do about this engine. I called toyota because I just wanted a in general, how much it would cost to change my current stock head gasket to a new MHG w/ the recommended Resurfacing and whatever else is needed. I was even thinking if it would be cheaper pulling out the 7MGTE again, buying a MHG and just sending it to a machine shop so they could do it. Just I'm not sure whether I should or not. Thanks in advance... sorry if this is another repeated question :nono:

$1000 is a good number (thats the average of what I got around here).

You can save alot by doing it yourself, and it will go alot quicker if you pull the motor.

Hmmm...napa will shave your head for $40-60
you can get a Cometic from HPF for $200
rtv sealer $5
I would sugget getting ARP head studs $150
Fel-Pro gastket set $350

I figured the 1K range. I think i might pull the motor like you said and do it like that. Just wondering if i get the cometic do I only need to shave the head? I could probably get the RTV sealer and the fel pro gaskets cheap at my work. thanks again.

pretty much you'll be spending around 800-1000 like posted above. But you have to do it right or it will blow on you. Cometic MHG or HKS/TITAN are all good brands.. you'll need ARP hardware, and if you want a MHG, then pull your block and have a machinist (I wouldn't reccomend NAPA surfacing your block.. or your head) clean the top aswell as your head to a certain specification (25 RA i believe?). Follow ARP's specs on how to torque it and you should be okay. There are MANY posts on how to do this correctly, and the only thing you can really do as far as price is add up the parts that people used, and call a machinist to find out price quotes, or meet him in person and talk about it.

I doubt you'll spend 800 to 1K more like 1.5 to 2 K if that..
it all depends on what you do and what all fails through your rebuild. Its a good idea to save alot more when redoing the hq so you'll won't be surprised if something goes wrong.

My experience:
$200 machining- for vat and mill block/head and install a set of expansion plugs( keep in mind every machine shop varies)

$119 Cheapest mhq at Titan
$200 is the average
$336.53 is the most expensive
That all various on how much is shaved of the head and block

$125 for head studs

$200- 250 for seal/gasket kit not sure the price but estiment(sp)

And of course the broken/ worn parts you'll find out along the way.

Oil Pump: 200~
Oil pump driveshaft: 160~
Water pump; $75~

It adds up quick as you can tell. I don't want to scare you or anything but its quite a good chunk of change. lol

Of course if you get discounts or do the work yourself its cheaper but i just want to give you an estiment(sp).

my .02 cents

No such thing as a good thickness, the goal is to match stock compression, if you have to round one way, it's probably better to lower the compression so you don't have to worry about detonation under boost. You'll need to know how much material has been taken off of both your head and deck, add those two and and the stock HG (i think 1.4mm, but don't quote me) to get your new gasket thickness for stock compression.

The cometic requires an RA of 50 or less, it appears as though the Titan is a cometic, and the HKS (and greddy as well) requires an even finer RA, i believe it is 25 for the HKS.

Do it right the first time, don't just deck the head and call it good, as advised by CYA.

I figured I would go all out with my MHG job, since you have to pull and strip the engine anyways! My machine work was probably abit more expensive than others, but I did a full rebuild with stock balanced internals, lots of new toyota parts, for all this, plus a $1000 exhaust system, i've spent over 8k so far!

At the minimum you'll need to deck both surfaces to the required RA or less, the MHG obviously, ARP hardware, you'll need to replace all the gaskets and seals. Run through the threads with a M12x1.25 tap to ensure smooth engagement, and no pressure buildup. While you're there, spec your oil pump, replace if necessary, spec out all your clearances, just friggin rebuild it lol

Oh, and ask Bigaaron about his 7/16" exhaust stud upgrade kit!

That depends on how much is shaved off of the head/block.

Any ways, My motor cost me about 2k w/ new pistons, bore, rings, fully balanced, new bearings, waterpump, all new gaskets, shimmed oil pump, decking the block, etc.. cut out the pistons/rings/bore and you are down to about 1500. Lose the cost from new bearings and the cost of assembling a short block, you are now around the 1k range. Just look around and find a reputable machine shop that can do it Right.
