Cooling issues continue...

Check sig for mods.

On the way to school from spring break my car was running perfect on the stock water temp gauge. I pull over and i can hear coolant slushing. So i open the hood and sure enough coolant is boiling in the radiator/overflow tank. If i take off the overflow cap smoke comes out(like when water boils)

Water pump is new
rad cap is new
This past weeked i burped the coolant system and put brand new coolant(mix) in.
Car runs great pulls hard doesnt smoke.

Any ideas on what it is? From the look of it the water temp gauge is dead perfect, but im boiling in the rad and overflow.

Could have been the mixture. The boiling point of your coolant depends on your ehylene glycol(Or "Dex-Cool", what you use)/water ratio. Hence the temp being where it should but the mixture still boiling over.

Mine, and many more had the same symptoms. After much denial, and fooling around trying to find problem, we all came to the same repair....BHG.:icon_evil

Our engines develope a small leak that allows combustion gas to leak into the cooling system, usually around the #6 cyl. That over-pressurizes the cooling system, which then over comes the radiator cap, and flows coolant into the bottle.

Fix it soon to save more costly repairs. Do it right, to avoid doing it again.

Yup.

Also, pressure test the radiator cap. Just because it's new doesn't always mean it works correctly. Same goes for the thermostat. The thermostat could also be helping the problem, switching to a 180 degree thermostat might not let the coolant boil, fixing the pressure and the overflow.

Jumping to BHG is an awful quick assumption, especially with a rebuilt engine with a cometic and arp's.

Start simple and work your way up.

the mix is a 50/50(i bought the premixed shit)
i guess im going to get a pressure test on the coolant system today, ill let ya all know how it goes

This diagnosis is right on the money, mine does the same thing. I have noticed that it occurs less when the heater valve is closed. Also if the system is slightly low on coolant it is not as bad either. I have to continue to
drive this thing till my new engine is finished. A slight leak of combustion gas
is the problem. I also get a slight skip when cranking after sitting overnight
(probably due to small amt. of water leaking into one cyl.) but this clears up
within 10-15 seconds.

yah, im doubting its hg related, cause ive had this problem for a while. before my motor was rebuilt it did it. everyone told me i had a bhg. took it off and the hg was mint. now i got a mhg w/arps and its still doing it. So i feel like its some other part of the cooling system.

i find it wierd that, my stock tempt gauge is reading normal, as well as my autometer. but i can hear it boiling and gurgling and such

Bad mixture is unlikely to cause overheating or boiling - plain water will cool better than a mix, but won't prevent galvanic corrosion at all, so your head will eat itself from the inside out.

Dead radiator cap is one of the bigger culprits. We have seen several of these that were faulty from the factory. Dead thermostat, plugged radiator, and we've even seen a water pump where the fins had corroded away.

Small leaks in the radiator to overflow hose, or the short hose inside the overflow container will cause overheating, which I realize you don't have, however this might help someone in the future. :)

Checking for a BHG is cheap and fast, just get a block check done, if there are exhaust gasses in the coolant this will expose them and save you a lot of pain and effort checking other stuff.

well i went and rented a pressure tester from autozone. My radiator cap is busted. doesnt hold any pressure what so ever. Im going to get another today and ill let you all know how it turns how. im very excited about this
