Do these things go bad or slightly out of whack over time? Isn't it the 2 wire variable resistance type? I know how to check them, but wondering if it was a waste of my time doing so.

It's a NTC thermistor. Yes, it's two wire. They can drift with time but are usually pretty stable. Since it's so important to the TCCS you may want to at least check it to see if it's within spec when the engine is hot. Or just replace it. Fwiw, nothing you do to keep your EFI system in tune is a waste of time ;)
