Coolant temp connector

Okay, so the other day I was doing maintenance on the supra - fixed 2 boost leaks - and I decided to take the car for a spin.

On the freeway, the turbo boosted to 6 lbs easy so I was cool. Still driving along I look up at my stock gauges and I noticed that the coolant temp is showing any signs of life. I immediately get off the freeway and drive into a home depot parking lot where I quickly check the car over.

Good news was there was nothing disasterous happening to the car. Bad news is the coolant temp connector's wire was frayed enough to just break off, leaving the connector connected to the sensor and the wire dangling.

My question is this, does the sensor do anything besides send a signal to the gauge (like a signal also to the ecu)?

By the way, this is the connector on the thermostat housing itself, not the one that is similarly designed and on the water outlet pipe.
