i was just thinking that my motor will be done this weekend, and i've already paid for over half of it, and i will pay the remainder when i pick it up, i have just enough left in my budget for the new/necessary bells and whistles to get this thing running with enough left for a tune, and i remembered that i have NEVER mentioned the torque plate to my machinist(although he is well known in the area for his expertise) he MAINLY does v8's and i did inform him of all the needed things that dumb 7m's need for machining, and he followed them to a tee, but like i said i forgot about the torque plate.....what are the consequences of not using a torque plate on a .20 over bore? how severe are they, can i just "rough it out" and be okay? because i don't have another 700 dollars for another teardown, re-bore, and re-assembly, all input is greatly appreciated, thanks, charles

What are your final power goals?

How anal are you about perfection?

Many guys have bored without a tq plate and been fine.

with this build i'm looking to stop at about 500 no matter the setup's capabilities(which probably aren't too far past that) and perhaps in a couple years i might bump up to 600, and i'm SOMEWHAT of a perfectionist in the sense that i want it done right the first time, but i'm not a super perfectionist. I just want to make sure that the motor will break in and run properly cuz i DON'T have the money to do ALL of this over again any time soon, thanks:icon_bigg

torque plates aren't REQUIRED (hell, when they made the engine I doubt they used on in the factory, same with the tightening of the timing belt idler bolt)

hell, you could go so anal to get the block to operating temps before it's worked on, but it's just not practicle...

IMHO it should be fine though...

Ive never used a torque plate not saying its right but Ive never had a problem with rings seating properly (450-500hp) just make sure your deck and head have the right RA for the HG you are using my 2 cents

isnt it more for aftermarket forged pistons? because they have such a close tolerance that if it gets too big then you wont seat the rings 100%... i talked to IJ about it and he explained it to me why you should use one.

Stock Motor - No big deal
Forged Motor - Spend the money

At least thats how i feel about it.

When your not using a torque plate, I advise to run an extra half a thou clearance. This will make up for any 2 sided tightening of the bore once you torque the head.

Well, with the plate, and without it, we measured the bores, and found up to a 4 thouands difference in them.

So, if your pistons are set to 6k, and that bore is not round, you can have quite a gap for the rings to seal up.. Not impossible, but not optimum either.

I'd say don't worry about it. As noted, many have done rebuilds with no plates, and never had any problems, and I've done them with, and still had issues... LOL (Not from the bore dimensions however.)
