How do you freshen up rod bearings? Hit em with some Febreeze?
I just replace them.

And on a more serious note, you would have to pull the crossmember to access them in-car. it'd just be easier to pull the motor.
I have done it in my MR2, but that car has no crossmember; you just unhook the exhaust and pull the pan.

I was looking at doing this... Then I looked at what would be involved and stopped looking into it when I got to the point where pulling the engine is easier, which is more or less at the point where I determined that what you basically end up doing is pulling the engine by dropping the front subframe.

Might as well pull the motor and check the crank and rods. Easier to do it right than to do it twice.

I dont know about you guys but pulling the motor isnt an easy task eather. just wondering if i tilt or lift the motor enough to get the pan off that i would be able to get to them.

In order to lift the motor that much, you need to disconnect the wiring harness at the ECU, disconnect the fuel system, drain the cooling system, and remove the radiator, disconnect all of your IC pipes and exhaust system, remove the PS pump from the engine, remove the A/C compressor from the engine, remove the shifter assembly from the transmission, disconnect the speedo cable reverse light switch and ABS sensor harness, unbolt the rear transmission mount, unbolt engine mounts, remove the hood to connect a hoist... The only difference between that and pulling the engine out entirely is... height.

Well, maybe you could risk leaving the radiator in if you remove the fan and clutch assembly, but I wouldn't risk it personally.
