I need a new porn storage machine....

Ok, so I havn't messed with computers for like 5+ years now after getting my car. I was at a buddies house over the weekend and saw call of duty 4 in action.. I'm hooked.. granted my old ass athlon 1.3ghz gforce 3 mx (iirc) system isn't going to cut it anymore with these new games.. so time to rebuild

After about a day of reading some reviews and talking to my buddy.. i've come up with this so far

intel 6600 quad core
Abit ip35 pro mobo
crucial ballistix 2gb ram pc2 8500
some geforce 8800 gt
wd caviar 320gb 7200 rpm drive

im sure i'll need some more crap.. its looking pretty expensive to do.. but what the hell.. i need something to do while my car is broke..

any sugguestions on the setup... this isn't a big dollar setup, but i think it will perform decent.. lmk what you think

Whatever you decide on, don't skimp out on the power supply. I have seen too many computers shit out on a budget unit.
Get PC-PowerandCooling.

The whole computer probably won't be more than 1,500$

quad core mainly for video editing/converting etc.. it really sucks trying to covert a 5 minute movie taking 20 minutes on my current comp.. eventually would like to get a hd video camera.. so even more data to crunch..

ah, ok, cause I was gonna say it's a bit overboard for what you wanna do...

the super spiffy, special named RAM is usually the picky PITA RAM that is bitch about timings... Get DURABLE RAM. With RAM, it's not the speed, but the quantity...

You could get a larger HDD though, for about $500 now you can get a Tb... You'll need a LOT of storage for video editing... (not to mention the previous mention of porn), but don't forget you can use your old HDD's if needed...

Do you want a QUIET computer? Everyone says Zalman is the best... I don't believe em LOL. Use panaflo fans and get a quiet PSU (the PSU in my case is loud as fuck, drive me nuts. Don't go with a case with a million 80mm fans, but with 2 or three very high flowing 120mm fans (replace with panaflos for best effect).

Don't forget you might want a new mouse, DVD burner, keyboard, monitor....

I really like having a quiet computer, personally. This is why I recommended the Seasonic power supply, definitely one of the quietest on the market, plus it is really efficient.

I have a Zalman CPU cooler and I really like it, very quiet, cools well, and looks awesome. There are better out there though both for cooling and noise levels.

If you are interested in quietness (which I highly recommend if it's not going to be locked away in a server room) check out SPCR: http://silentpcreview.com/

I have a passive-cooled video card that I'm really happy with. Video card fans tend to be noisy and unreliable, partially due to their size.

got a passive cooled vid card as well...

not a fan of the zalman stuff for a couple of reasons... mainly they're too damn expensive, they are HUGE and HEAVY (I fucking HATE the retarded trend towards 5lb CPU coolers), and they don't cool that well unless you take them off the silent mode. They get loud on their best cooling...

Hit up newegg and post links here to what you're looking at. It's far easier for me to research them that way as you're doing the legwork anyway to look at stuff...

This is true. I have one of their older smaller 7000 model which isn't too bad. Also, the newer 9500 is supposed to cool better with less weight due to the design. I forget what the top cooler is now. I think it was Thermaltake a year or so back, but I haven't built a computer in quite a while.

I use a thermaltake ToughPower power supply. It's extremely quiet, probably because it has the biggest fan that will fit in a power supply, bar none.

Good call on the 8800 GT. That will be my next card, likely in a week, maybe 2.

I'm with Poodles on the RAM, get lots of good stuff, don't bother with the killer high end stuff, it's enough of a pain to deal with that you won't bother.

If you don't have one already, get a memory card reader, they are only ~$15.

Bigger hard drives. Again, killer speed isn't that big of a deal anymore, if you're really worried about it, buy multiples, get a MB with SATA RAID on it, and stripe them for speed. 2 average drives striped for speed are easily faster than the best SATA drives out there.

I only use the big, heavy CPU heatsinks if they mount to the motherboard with bolts, and I don't think much out there supports the old mounting system anymore.

I dont care about noise.. I'll look into heatsinks later on, my buddy suggested the zalman.. I'm going to overclock as much as I can safely so want good cooling.. Free performance for a little extra noise is worth it... I'll just turn up the music ;)

I'm not sure what you mean on the ram.. I'll have to look to see what I can get.. but looking at other peoples specs they have ~ the same speed.. I aggree I'll buy 2 more gb later on.. but for now again.. 2gb will work (2x 1gb chips)

As for the HD. yea I'll look to see whats available again, but the 320 gb had good performacne (i think) and cheap.. and was later going to buy a 2nd and run a raid...

I'm going to get a 22" lcd.. as my 19" crt is going out... but for the other stuff.. I'm going to use the same dvd burner, keyboard etc for now.. that all can be changed later if needed...

I'll get links of stuff i'm looking at later in the day (they're saved in my cart at home, so will have to find them again here at work)

edit: didn't have anything to do at work.. soo
