what excatly is compressor surge? is it when the air has no where to go and it just backs up to the turbo? i heard someone saying compressor surge is when there is too much air being pulled in into the turbo inlet. therefore thats why is some aftermarket turbos has extra holes in the inlet and an outer ring on the outside of the inlet hole for the excess to go. i am a bit confused about this thanks for the help

Compressor surge happens when the turbo is spooled up and forcing pressurized air into the manifold, and the throttle plate is snapped closed (caused by shifting and taking your foot off of the gas pedal). All of that pressurized air needs to have somewhere to go (escape through a BOV), if it doesn't it just goes right back to the turbo, which is still spinning, and will slow down the compressor wheel violently...it can cause damage and ultimately lead to failure of the turbo, or damage to the compressor wheel.
