hey guys just want some opinions and pointers. first time attacking a metal head gasket on the supra i've always had luck with OEM's, so time to do things right. Now i understand that cometics are more forgiving to surfices but im not to worried about the block being warped since it is iron and the surfice will end up being spot free and the head will be checked and decked at a machine shop for a flat surfice there. now do i go with the cometic because of its forginess of a BEAD type hks which also has has forgivness according to MVP's website. like the 2mm bead said "#2 seller hg for the mk3, better for motors with some warp to them and for high hp applications"(im dropping the compression to thats why 2mm) so yeah thats pretty much it. and im gonna do arp stud locks and like i said any other pointers would be good, like more elaboration on the copper spray, and preporations

i'm runing an hks 1.2mm, arp's at 85ft/lbs. i prepped the block with sandpaper wraped around a piece of barstock working my way up to 1000 grit. holding fine, never needed to add coolant. however if i were you i would go cometic with the permatex break quiet. it's just that extera level of security that is nice to have on the weakest link in this motor. as for other stuff, see if you can find a machine shop that can meashure the r/a value of your head.

I did the same thing.. no problems. Only difference is i went up to 2000 grit wrapped around a piece of glass (perfectly flat) and used a cometic 2mm.

I think either gasket will work fine. I have the Cometic 2mm headgasket. The prep work on my head was perfect, but the block surface was not nearly as clean and it sealed.

I recently ran 30+ psi accidentally on my SP59GT and lifted my head. Got the gurgling sound and started losing coolant. All I had to do was tighten down my head bolts to 90 ft pounds and it resealed itself.

so pretty much aslong as i prep the block decent enough and use the permatex brake spray, i should be fine, and the hks bead type or cometic is pretty much just preferance and both the same quality?

well when i did my head gasket i used copper spray and a 1.2MM MHG.

I had some fitment issues with the hks gasket. It wouldnt go on all the way on those studs. Took som fighting with, but it went on. Running 12lbs on stock ct w/ no problems :)
