As many of you know, im doing an almost-FULL restoration to my mk3 supra, almost similar to "Project 1BYDFALT" except im not doing the exact same things, that would be a huge amount of work! But since my car is in need of paint, im having trouble deciding whether or not to stay with 3E5 or paint it a different color, im using stock toyota colors so nothing fancy. Any suggestions would help! right now im thinking of the dark grey color mk3 supras came with, let me know what you think!

My Supra came in 3E5, and like you, I thought of repainting it in a dark metallic gray. After I looked at what would be involved in painting the engine bay I decided that Super Red wasn't such a bad color after all. It helps that my interior is a medium, not dark, gray. What color is yours?

hmm yeah im more towards keeping the same color, after all, red is a nice color, my interior is medium grey, i would prefer shadow grey though as it looks alott better than medium grey when its in mint condition imo

I'm surprised you're even in such a predicament ;)

Red's just beautiful to the eye, lively, aggressive, and sophisticated all at once.
Plus, you don't see too many 3E5s out there. (None where I live, and have never once seen one on the road)

lol, totally biased.

Colour should be the last thing you're concerned with if you're doing a complete resto... You most likely will have MONTHS/YEARS before you get to the paint stage.

If you look into what is involved with a bare-metal respray, I think you'll find you will change your mind (unless you're lazy and want to keep your engine bay 3E5)

My car was somewhat faded when I got it. I polished it and it looked a lot better. Then I resprayed one of the quarter panels after fixing the dent that was in it when I got the car, and wow! That 3E5 red is really something when it's fresh! The car looks totally different with the paint the deep, rich red it's supposed to be. Come spring I'll shoot the whole car.

Until recently my Supra was pinking on me as well. After meeting the guy who's gonna be installing my cat-back, he suggested to me that I get 3M liquid rubbing compound and Zymol wax.

Friggin' awesome.
Prior to applying both, I never could see myself in my car's paint. Got rid of a good amount of hazing and some other weird marks on the bonnet.

Never thought my paint had so much potential.

yeah i tried using 3m rubbing compound (heavy cut) before but it only made the car shiny enough to reflect but still had the faded chalky effect on it, so thats when i decided to repaint the whole car, PPG clearcoat ftw!

Toyota 182. Bluish Gray Metallic. My car is currently getting repainted. I'll post up pics soon so you can see how it looks.

Factory red looks awesome when it's shiny(see ERA's car).Base clear wont oxidize or turn "pink" like the factory red did either.I think the mk3 looks great damn near any color ,as long as the time was took to do it right.IE trim, lights, handles(which so far you've done.)I would go with the red quicker than a charcoal grey though.

I say go white. Since white is the racing color of japan its fitting. I read it in a mag. about how they got the color and the Significance of the white. Thats also why most of the Skylines are white
