Cold Start Issues

I have done a bit of searching across a number of forums about cold start and have just replaced the coolant temp sensor as well as cleaned the ISC valve. However, I still have a motor that does not want to fire in the morning. Historicaly the colder it is, the worse my problem is.

Today after replacing the sensor and cleaning the ISC it would crank, sputter, crank, nothing, sputter... etc... Finally shot some starter fluid down the intake and it fired right up.

The motor has been in and running for about 1000 miles and once the car is going, it has no problems. It runs fine, pulls great, and other than being a little rough at idle is great. However in the morning it has taken as long as 30 minutes to get the car going. Not what I would call a reliable car.

Not sure if would make a difference, but I am running NGK Irridiums gapped to 30. Friend of mine mentioned in passing that its a cold plug and has heard of cars having issues with that... but not sure in this situation.

Anyway, thats my situation. Anyone have ideas as to whats going on?

if you have to spary starter fluid to get it going it might be a fuel related problem. i would check to see if your fuel pump is priming and what your base fuel pressure is at. also you could replace the plug to rule out that problem, also take a look at the caps in the ecu.

Thanks, I will check into the fuel pump.

Just to clarify.. this was the first time I have resorted to using starter fluid to get it going. It has started everytime, just has taken a long time to get going. Shortest time was 2 minutes, longest time was around 30.

My 2J does something similar on cold starts only it seems to either be getting too much fuel or trying
to idle too low. When its cold it will crank fire then die, but if I give it just enough throttle to keep it from dying it will usually run on its own after it warms for thirty seconds or so. Until it warms up the exhaust smells like raw fuel.
