When I first start the engine I get this very slight tap/knock for a few mins seems to only happen when idling. Once it warms up it sounds perfect no tapping no knocking. It's very slight

Probably valvetrain noise, what oil are you using and when was the last oil change?

On a side note, when was the last time the valve shims?

P/0 ran redline 15w40 oil still looks brand new. I'm gunna be putting 5w40 t6 oil in when I change it. The oil doesn't need to be changed.

And I have no idea when or if the head/valves had any work done I'm tearing the engine down in the spring.

check the cam cap clearances. Specifically on the exhaust side #6 and #7. Last place to receive oil in the engine.

All of the above are good suggestions, but I've seen this before on many DSM's. It is mostly likely a tight wristpin. I suggest you let it warm up enough so the knock is gone before you load it.

That piston and pin that is tight, if you were to pull it out and hold it in your hand, and cold, it would be somewhat difficult to move.

This happens to me on cold starts as well but my motor knocks for 2 seconds then it goes away; however, I do have some valve train ticking but I was told that is normal or just happens.

This "tick" may be the loud injectors...those things are ridiculous.

I could see piston slap. Never seen it on a stock piston 7m. Increased rpm or load should make it louder. Usually tapers off as things warm up. Subarus are notorious for this.

Ticking and knock are not the same thing in automotive. It is the tone, not just the volume.
I've been told it's just valve ticking not really something to worry about from what I understand
