coilover or shock/spring combo?

So I really want to fix the suspension on my 87 supra. The body roll and tems are not for me but I'm sort of on a budget. I've been looking at whether or not to get coilovers or a shock and spring combo. I do plan on drifting (very ricer of me I know) but i also don't want too harsh of a ride. So i was thinking coilovers was the way to go. I found some used cusco ones for 700 dollars on ebay, but the seller is very vague. Though they look to be in good condition. Has anybody used these before and what are they like? Its either these or godspeeds which I haven't heard many good things about. So on the other hand I was considering just getting eibach springs and tokico blues or something. What do you guys think I should do?

I went with a bilstein and RS-R race spring on my 87...and it sucked! The spring rate is the problem...I would go find someone that does custom spring rates and do a spring and shock way. I would suggest a 14kg front and 10kg rear...the supra is heavy, and when you pitch that car sideways your tires are going to need help with that lateral overload of weight!

The stock setup is a coil over.

true in the technical sense, that the stock setup does use a coil over shock (or strut) design, but in the sense that everyone thinks of a coilover, the stock setup does not have adjustable valve dampening, nor does it have a height adjustable collar on it

Adjustability is not what makes a coilover. Having a coil over the spring is what makes a coil over. Saying you want coilovers is like saying you want to replace your ignition with a DLS.

Yes Nick, I understand that. What you seemingly are failing to see is that a lot of people that don't know the terminology (coil over shock) see coilovers as the combination of the spring over the shock with adjustable height and dampening.

But enough of this back and forth

OP: just save up and get coilovers. Do it once, do it right.

I don't fail to see anything. I will keep repeating it, as I have been doing for some time. And that is all I have to say about that.

These are some of the most idiotic, useless replies I've ever seen on a forum.

+1 for Stance, they make great coilovers. My set should be coming in Monday :) I have an upgraded shock/spring combo right now and it's way too soft for me to drift without the incredible body roll you see in my sig, I wish I had just gone with coilovers from the start!

so you wish you did what you have already done (just with different shocks and spring rates)

I can name quite a few people off the top of my head that got their cars where they wanted without buying "coilovers." Proper shock/spring combo that's tuned will outperform any of the "coilovers" out there.
