it depends on what is causing the leak. if it's a scratch in the cylender bore you have to get a new one. if one of the rubber seals is bad than you can just re-build. take it apart and have a look. however a new master cylender is like $50, a re-build kit is $15, and i hear that just getting a new one is more reliable.

Your brakes are your life (and every other mofo out on the road with you). I have rebuilt around 20-30 for customers thru the years, but for the last 10 years I just use a remanufactured. Easier, and warrantied. Out of 30-40, I've only had one bad out of the box. Non have ever come back failed, so the reman seems the way to go.

Well...duh...I was distracted:aigo: me bad.....
Any way, what I said above also applies to clutch masters and slaves. I used to rebuild them all the time, cause the parts were way cheaper for the customer than new or reman, and I made the $$ in labor.

If the kit is cheap, and the parts house has a reman on the shelf today (just in case you find yours all wasted inside)...then you could rebuild it.
If it fails at some future point, you can always get the reman one.

But I only use reman at the shop.

I guess it depends on why its leaking. If its heavy corrosion in the cylinder bore, then a rebuild kit may not last as long or will leak from the get go. You have to remove the corrosion which opens up the bore diameter. When I was poor, I probably would try the rebuild.

But now, I just get Toyota new. Its expensive, but you won't have a problem for many years.
