Clutch life expectancy while drag racing?

Just wondering how badly drag racing will shorten the life of my clutch? I have an ACT Xtreme pressure plate and an ACT organic street disc rated to hold 522tq. The clutch is perfectly broken in, and holds my 400+ hp perfectly. I'd like to do a little bit of drag racing this year just for fun, but I know that hard launches off the line cause a huge amount of wear compared to regular street driving.

Any ballpark ideas from experience, how many hard drag passes a clutch like this will handle?

As said, how much you feather and slip it...

And if you screw up and glaze it it will shorten it quite a bit as well...

You won't need to feather it with slicks. I've run Tom's Supra and with no 2 step and slicks and netted some good times.

I would be happy to take your car down the strip for a pass if I let you borrow my slicks and skinnies. :D

Grammatically, that sounds really funny!

I think my aluminum flywheel makes it hard to drop the engine's momentum into the launch to avoid bog.

Terrible advice...

I've seen people literally sidestep the clutch to launch :3d_frown:

Nothing wrong with that... On a blown V8. Doesn't work to well with a turbo car. lol

It's how you break your drivetrain...

On the street, I just remove my foot slowly like normal, just at a much higher RPM and it will build boost and not lose traction. Gonna have to slip it more on a sticky dragstip though...

tekdeus does have a good point there. Lightweight flywheels are not as preferable for drag racing. Once you get your 2 step, launching will be alot easier with it. :)

I was running 12 psi on a 57 trim with a set of drag radials. All I did was launch at 5k and let the clutch out like i was leaving a street light. It launched amazing. No 2 step needed :sarcasm:

Now when we want to leave the line WITH boost in a 5 speed, 2 step needed. Helps be consistant on the track also.

I don't have a 2 step, waiting on the emanage ultimate to work it self out for the mk3, But I rev up to 4500 then let the clutch out fairly quick, not dropping it but more like a red light pull, but this is with my MT dr's.

Poodles, when do you want to go out to the track? My car will be done by the end of the month so some time late next month I'll be heading out. I normally go with some other supra guys if you want to come.

The aluminum flywheel won't really affect your launch. I went from a steel flywheel to an aluminum and it really took no time to adapt to it.

I tried launching one time so far with my 2 step and it bogged like crazy. Think I need to raise it up a lot, but either way I prefer launching the natural way with lots of throttle, RPM's and a quick clutch slip.

Also remember, the more clutch slip you use (during shifting and launching), the more your saving other drivetrain parts.

lol Correction, driver needed. ;) You don't "need" a 2step but it does help with consistency.
