I know this question has been asked a few times, but when I searched, I couldnt find any useful info. I've cleaned and tightened all power and ground connections. but nothing I'm tryin is workin. if I need a new starter, I can afford it, but I dont wanna get one for no reason whatsoever, so I need to justify buying a new starter. it used to take a long time to start(10-15sec.) for about a month up until it quit on me.

Problem happening when car is hot or cold? If when hot, then the solenoid is getting heat soaked and you'll need an external solenoid to remedy that. If cold, then either low battery power, or the gap between contacts within the battery are now too wide. You could dissamble the battery and replace the copper contacts ($10) or verify you've got a good battery and / or ground.

try and connect a wire to the small signal wire on the starter and put the key in the on position and touch the positive on the battery with the wire to see if it starts.:evil2:

Golden information. If I had known about this instead of the 31 pages I read about replacing the starter because of the starter contacts being worn out, I wouldn't have grey hairs in my moustache.

IT won't even click if its the security system.

Its the signal wire being loose. I know, I have the same problem as thousands of other mk3 owners out there. Put a new connecter on the signal wire or wiggle the signal wire and try turning the key.

try:

trading batteries with another car

jumping it.

take a long extension and hit the starter selenoid a couple of times.

put it in neutral and roll it a bit and drop clutch, not a full popstart but enough to knock the teeth on flywheel a bit loose.

if the first two dont work then its isolated to your starter, if either of the last work then its a locked selenoid, if it flat at out do shit after all of this go to your parts store and let me know how much fun it is to get the top bolt that holds the starter.

I'm gonna wait 'till it stops raining to push start it, because my shoes have crappy grip as it is. my boss is actually thinking of fixing it for me because I want to sell it, and he wants me to have a dependable car.
