simple green, brake parts cleener, your moms dish sponge w/ soapy water and paper towels. just keep water off of the sensors and the chemicals off of the paint cus they will straight up take it off.

Don't mean to threadjack, but if I were to bag the air filter, AFM etc. couldnt I just power wash my engine bay with cleaner etc. Someone on SF did it and it looked amazing.

What Kyle said. Bag the AFF, Alt, ect and use aluminum foil around connectors or any other things you're worried about then have at it. I do it twice a year and never had a problem. Afterwards do what you can to keep it clean (fix leaks, ect) so it never gets outta hand.

I've done spray on engine degreaser then power washed with the car running and never had any issues on my other vehicles but recently I was rinsed come coolant off my supra engine and then it mis fired for a good 30 mins, figure it was water on a wire or around a plug. I never sprayed directly onto any eletrical components and made sure to drive the vehicle after to get any water to evap.

Clean any grime and dirt off with simple green and rags then use some brake clean if your really worried about power washing. Brake clean took care of my timing case nicely...

No flame my man, Shaeff would cut my balls off.....and rightly so ;)

Cleaning an engine is like painting in that most of it's prep work. Just scrunch the foil tight around whatever it is you want to seal. Seal everything up and spray with a mild solvent then use a hose rather than a power washer. No matter what you need to take some care with it though. Just don't aim it full on to electrical stuff. Power washer is OK too, just don't get crazy with it. Frankly, if your careful you shouldn't need to seal any connectors as Toyo ones have a pretty good design but watch out for other stuff.

What exactly do I want to seal just so I know for the future?

Well, the AFM, alternator, TPS, stuff like that. As long as you're careful to avoid jetting directly onto things you won't have a problem. And as the other poster said, clean the delicate and real grimey stuff by hand, washdown with the engine warm and run it afterwards to dry everything off. The car isn't as delicate as you think. Just keep water out of open electrical stuff. If you really want no gremlins you should ocassionally treat every connector in the engine bay with a good corrosion protection agent. I use an aerospace product called ACF 50. Good stuff. If it's good enough for the jet it's good enough for the Supra ;)

hose techniques kit, and alot of time and care. Just seriously sit there and look at your bay and think of ways to relocate things out of the way. Look at some peoples engine bays in the build up thread and brainstorm.

I personally want to relocate the battery, ps resevoir and overflow. So they are somewhat hidden. I wanna move the coilpack up along the firewall and reroute my PCV piping in between the valve covers down towards the firewall and around the side of the motor to a catch can. I also want to get a spark plug valley cover like the 1J and 2J's have and hide alot of that wiring mess. I even want to relocate the BOV presure line and get a FFIM. That way the entire top of the motor is clean and almost nothing is ontop.

Its alot of work but it would look damn sexy :)

battery relocation kits, you get em on alot of online vendors. They usually relocate to the hatch area or under the back seats depending where you want it to be.

as far as relocating the coil pack i believe its as simple as reversing your plug wire order so you use plug wire 1 for plug wire 6, etc etc and there are a few holes along the firewall dead center w/ the motor and you can mount it right up onto that and run the wires along the center.

edit:
but i dont know of anyone that makes the valley covers for the 7M :(

with a supra although probably possible, i wouldn't do it. especially since i live in arizona and have 110 degree summers. Just get some really nice expensive electric low profile fans that flow like stock or better and your good to go.

but dont go fanless

I was just gonna say watch out for the spark plugs. If any water gets down under the boot the car will miss and you'll spend the next 30 mins taking the plugs out to let the water get out of there. It's a real PITA, lemme tell ya.

A hose works just as good as a Power washer, only time I would suggest a power washer is if it has heated water, then it works a helluva lot better. :icon_bigg People will get pissed, but just go through a car-wash and spray the bay out, just spray simple green everywhere and go at it, if people start honking just ignore them, it adds to the entertainment for the evening.

our shop does between 4-8 engine details a day
we use a special engine cleaner (cant think of the name) that as you spray it, it actually repells water from the connectors.
but thats only on 5 years or newer vehicles :naughty:

NOW FOR how i do my MKIII.
i always do this in the afternoon/night when the car is cool and it can sit without running overnight < suggested

1. remove the coil pack,wires,plugs
2. remove afm and cover and put a ziplock bag over the intake pipe and tape it shut.
3. a while ago i picked up these rubber triangle pcs. that i put in the spark plug holes and they dont let a drop of water in.
4.disconnect battery
5.if your car is moddified, you know what else you want to protect aside from the above.
6. spray it down with degreaser/cleaner and let it sit for a few mins (dont let it dry though)
7.it has to be pressure washed! a hose wont do
8.dont go too crazy around the alt, fuze relays, spark plug valley
9.repeat steps 6+7 if necessary and fi the car is really bad YOU will have to get your hands dirty and brush out the more stubborn areas.
10.i use an air hose to dry of the engine bay really well and reassemble or let it sit overnight without running that way its good and dry by morning

polish off the chrome
wipe down any small areas that need it
a good angine dressing makes everything glow like new again :icon_bigg

ps. check spark plug hole for water before installing them

your car will love you:icon_bigg :icon_bigg
