i dont think i have seen a thread about this but a few weeks ago my cig. outlet stopped working. it went out after i used one of those plug in tire pump things. before that, the only thing that was ever plugged in was a radar detector. ive checked the fuses and they are all good. if it is a short, how hard would it be to DIY or how much would a shop charge to fix?

where would i even begin to check it at? sorry, im a noob at this kind of stuff.
You put your finger in the socket and if it gets hot then your element is bad:)

No really you get a multi meter and put the plus in the center and the ground on chassis ground. Most time its the element that goes bad they are cheap I'd just replace that and then if it doesn't work you can check it with a meter.
Also the wire some times comes loose in the back of the socket especially if you have had that part off the dash for some reason, you might be able to get to it from the ashtray.
