alright, I have a NA 89, 5 speed. the head gasket has to be replaced but I want to put something with quality in it so that this can be avoided again for a long time. What is pretty much the best of the best when it comes to headgaskets. Yes, I understand I'm not running any boost but I don't care I want to spend the extra money on the hg and studs.

Well that's not even an issue. I'm going to spend a looong time on this so everything is going to be done right. I'm going to be taking a picture every time I take a part off AND label everything just so it goes smoothly. I am more interested in getting a metal hg though really. I was just wondering about brands.

I'm going to do it the right way. Its a JDM motor but I'm still going to have the head and block resurfaced.

HKS 1.2mm MHG one in mine done close to 50,000kms now and lasted 3 years, car cops a thorough caning. As per MCD motorsports to use a Metal head gasket the block and head have to have a mirror like perfectly flat surface.

although I may get a lot of flak for this...I think in some cases a metal headgasket is overkill...at least for an NA.

I know a local toronto club member that has a spotless 89. His engine has a stock toyota headgasket which he has torqued down to the proper level (much higher than stock - I can't recall the number though) and is running 12psi on his CT-26. He's had this setup for many years and has not had any trouble.

I think for an NA, a toyota gasket may be just fine when torqued properly...

this is true i have a mhg and arp head bolts on my NA and i have no problems with it the composite one that was in there before got overheated once before i changed out the whole cooling system and from there it was on the road to a bhg. Mhg is a good way to go because it gives you that little extra breathing room knowing that you wont blow one up. If only i could say the same about rod knock..............

ANY headgasket can blow easily.

ITS ALL IN THE TUNE.

Get your car tuned with a stock headgasket = no problems

Run lean on a exspensive MHG = blown.

Theres other factors than just the material its made out of.

i don't care if you got a motor that was just bought from the toyota factory- you'd still need to get it lapped... (head and block)

Correct, just cause its JDM and only "45k miles!"

Doesn't mean its perfect, or has 45k miles;)
