hi all, i'm a newbie here. pls help me out:)

i recently bought an 88 supra na 5sp. it runs ok. but it does have some issues. one problem i've noticed is the choking problem. if i let go of the gas pedal very quickly, it'd choke even in the 5th gear (at regular highway speed). it's like most manual cars in the 1st or 2nd gear. of all the other manual cars that i've driven, this kind of choking only happened in 1st or 2nd gear. it'd be very smooth in 3rd and above gears no matter how fast i release the gas pedal. but this supra chokes even in the 5th gear. i'll have to gently let go of the gas pedal to avoid this choking problem. anyone knows what might have caused this problem?

i saw some oil leaking from the transmission. and a little burnt smell (not oil, but more like rubber burnt) after about 5 miles of driving. i'm still trying to figure out where the leak and smell came from. would they be related to the choking problem? as for the transmission oil leak. i'm suspecting the boot covering the clutch fork. the bottom fitting of this boot is somehow bigger than the opening. so it's wrinkled and loosed. as for the burnt smell, i'm not quite sure if it was the brake or not. the brake is having squeezing sound. i'm wondering if it has anything to do with the smell.

the previous owner said the car had a bhg, but not too bad. it was temporally fixed by head gasket fix thru coolant system. the valve cover gasket was also leaking oil. but he had tightened the screws and fixed that too. so far i haven't seen any noticeable loss in coolant or engine oil. (i have driven less than 50 miles total since i bought this car a month ago). but i'm gona replace these gaskets anyway. other than these, i'll also need to replace the power steering (it leaks), parking brake cables (not very smooth, rocky sound when pulling hand brake), the hood and trunk lift struts, ball joints, drive belts and timing belts. i wana make sure it's problem free before i take it as my daily drive.

Ok,

Check Codes For The "Choking" Issues.
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?Section=FI&P=23

Report Back After That....

Where was the leak? It could be a input shaft seal, engine rear main seal, output shaft seal, tower rubber gasket, speedometer assembly O-ring, fill plug, drain plug, reverse switch or the ABS sensor.

You will need to replace the head gasket. A OEM gasket with ARP head studs will be fine if you don't plan on any major power upgrades. I am assuming the head does not have a crack either.

thx for the info. i did the error code check before i bought the car and nothing came up (no error). as for the leak, there are oil stains all over the transmission. so it's hard to pin point where the leak comes from. i'm thinking of using some transmission stop leak (like the lucas transmission fix). is it a good idea?

and for the head gasket, i'm thinking of getting the toyota head gasket set with arp head bolts.

Stop leak is never a good idea anywhere. Its just a goo that covers everything internally and eventually seeps out of where the leak is coming from and solidifies.

Atleast thats how I look at it.
