Checking timing

Ok, how do I check my timing? I need to verify the timing on my map is the same on the engine, but not sure how to do it. My timing light you attach it to the plug wire, but have no plug wires... is there another type of timing gun I need to buy or what?

I used the green rpm wire which is used when dynoing. Worked out fine for me and my timing seemed to be on par

just used a standard timing light? will try it when i get home
