Need some help & input.
Today my Check Engine light came on when starting the car & below 30 MPH when driving. I haven't driven the car in over a week since I left for vacation. Even before that, the car has been harder & harder to start & running a little rough. Could I need a tune-up, or could it be worse?
Also, two months ago I had my manifold gasket replaced & maybe the shop screwed up somewhere?
I also think that my valve gasket/s may be cracked or broken... I noticed this possible problem about 4 weeks ago when I began to see oil residue. Could this be the problem.
I'm afraid to drive with the check engine light on at any speed.
Any suggestions?

Check the connector. If that clip that keeps the connector from falling out is broken off, it could slip off.

most likely your AFM is bad and needs to be replaced.

do this:

while the car is idling, unplug the AFM.

it should idle very well with the AFM unplugged if its causing the problem.

keep in mind that you don't need an entire AFM, but just the electronics. (held on by 3 screws)

Sorry you're bummed but frankly I'm not surprised. I was going to stop you from buying another AFM last week. In fact I was so sure the old one was good I was going to ask you send it to me instead of trashing it.

Why didn't I? Because I'm tired of pointing out the same thing again and again: throwing parts at the car is no way to repair it. You need to prove a problem, preferably at least two different ways. You didn't do that. Had you done so you might have found something else wrong (the wiring for example) and the AFM innocent.

Based on this thread I'm at a loss as to how you determined the old one was bad. Maybe it is and the new one is too. Either way you should have tested the old one. Now you have two to test and go from there. I know this is probably the last thing you wanted to hear but education is never painless.

No need to be sorry Josh. The car is mainly electrical. If you're going to work on it you need to invest in a good digital mulitmeter (along with a TSRM) and learn how to use it. It always amuses me how some guys will spend tons of coin on stupid stuff for the car yet cheap out on what they need to fix it. Without tools and knowledge the only alternative other than a shop is swapping parts. Monkeys can do that. You're not a monkey are you? ;)

The AFM generates a square wave signal that varies in frequency with airflow. It's a simple matter to measure it by using a meter. You can even do it off the car using a fan or a vacuum cleaner. That won't check the wiring though and that could be your problem. Or maybe the new AFM is bad. Either way a meter will prove it by testing everything involved. If you need help doing this we'll walk you through it.
