In doing my rebuild was thinkin about removing the charcoal canister. If I did this I would go the plug the line and vent the gas cap route. Does that elminate all the gas fumes, because I'd rather leave it as is if I am going to be smelling fumes.

Also how large does the vent hole in the gas cap need to be. I read one post where someone had complained of overflow and gas running down the side of the car. Does this usually happen?

Are there any other adverse effects of doing this modification?

Well... you'll fail smog if you have an inspection. The hole doesn't have to be big, make it the same size as the inner diameter of the hose that goes to the charcoal canister.

Gas running out of the hole is rare in the extreme.

Why would you even want to do it in the first place?

The adverse effect is contributing to pollution. It was put there for a reason.
There is a reason why we have emissions on our cars--it is to not pollute the environment.

Having a race car with no emissions that you run on the track is one thing, but removing emissions for little to no reason on a daily driver is another matter.

What if everyone that has a car decides to remove everything emission related? What if companies said, "Hell, we can make cars cheaper by not adding emission components"? Or how about if factories said, "Hell, why spend so much trying to dispose of hazardous materials the right way, let's do it the cheap and easy way!"

The weight of a charcoal canister is only 2 pounds. How much of a gain in performance will you achieve by removing it?

Tony go eat some granola and save some three toed pink eye yellow butt monkeys.

Any who, if you dont' care about emissions yada yada yada simply plug the line under the hood, and drill a 1/16" hole in your gas cap or get a vented one from *INSERT FAVORITE AUTO PARTS STORE HERE*.

Ok there.

I realize the adverse effects on the environment, my question was pertaining to the car. I would basically want to remove it to clean up the engine bay, just like everyone else does.

Kind of the same logic as why do people remove the cats. Yes, its bad for the environment, but then its one of the most basic an initial mods in upgrading the supra. Upgrading anything else performance wise would not be possible without this.

new rochelle
im around boats alot during the season and there are no fuel evaporative measures required with many boats, larger vessels may require some type of emmisions control in that respect, but there are many many smaller craft (~12 feet in length) which use atmospherically vented fuel tanks.

i operate my boat about as much as i do my supra, my charcole canister is gone for aesthetic reasons.

if for some reason i am not able to get inspections any longer i guess ill have to put it back in!
