I've got gobs of play in mine and it 'clunks' on shifting but no vibration

If the center bearing has play in it...it causes the "clunk" and that gets worse as the rubber gets old. After a while, you might hear/feel a kind of "buzzing" sound as the play get worse. The other problem with this bearing is when the car sits for a length of time, the heavy driveshaft creates a flat spot on the rubber. If you drive it frequently, usually not a problem...if it sits for a while though, the flat spot will cause vibration...its more subtle...different from the buzzing I mentioned earlier.
