The Autozone in our town doesn't seem to carry GC anymore. :( They have a 0W 30 Castrol oil, but it doesn't have "European Formula" on the front of the bottle; and it also doesn't say "Made in Germany" anywhere on the back. It also doesn't meet certain manufacturer requirements like BMW's LL01, like the GC does. (I took pics of the front and back of the bottle with my cellphone, but I need to find the card adapter to be able to upload pics of the bottle).

I'm afraid that our local Autozone now stocks an American made 0W 30 oil, instead of the GC 0W 30 oil. Anyone else notice this at their Autozone?

Keep something in mind: The only true synthetic (PAO) Castrol markets as "Syntec" in the US is it's European Formula 0W-30. All others are a Grp III hydrocracked dino oil. Before someone asks about Castrol Edge, read this:

Deabionni - Yes, I have seen some stores switch to the US 0W-30. You should still be able to special order it at that store. FYI - PepBoys has been stocking GC here in Arizona.

Really? they have GC european formula in every autozone in a metro area here. Vermont and Pico, Vermont and 3rd, all the way to Los Feliz every store has European formula and they give mobil 1 or KnN filter depending on the sale.

Concerning this special, I'd want the Mobil 1 filter. Both K&N and Mobil 1 filters are made by Champion Labs...pretty much identical construction except for the end nut on the K&N. The Mobil 1 uses a synthetic media that is superior to the media used in the K&N.

JDub, whats the best product to use to clean the engine inside. Most of JZ engines ive seen have pretty thick black deposits in the cam cover area. if there a solution to this? some special oil additive?

Thanks, jdub, I'll have to ask them to see if they can order GC for me then. I know Pepboys carries GC, but unfortunately the nearest one to me is about three hours away. :(

EDIT: I found the part number for GC for Autozone, in case anyone else finds that their local Autozone no longer stocks GC.

A PAO synthetic does a great job, but it happens over time. This product seems to work:
http://www.auto-rx.com/index.html

1) Follow the instructions exactly.
2) Don't use an expensive synthetic.

Disclaimer: I've never used it, but a lot of people have with success. Personally I don't let my motor get in a condition to need it ;)

Thanks Jdub for the tip. it looks really bad in the before pictures almost like like slime or boogers. What i've seen on 1jzs is just dry extra black deposits on walls, almost like textured paint. i dont know if thats from motors sitting for awhile without use or from bad oil, but that stuff is bugging me. my 2jz na has just golden coloured bare metal pretty much nothing else. is that a sign of any problems with the engine or just poor oil choice?

Pern - likely it was just what happened while the motor was sitting in the junk yard all that time...at least that's what I've seen, especially on the 1J motors.

John - Oh yeah it is ;)
